I believe most historians will say Alexander the Great. He was certainly the greatest in the Western world. Maybe there was someone like Kublai or Gengis Kahn in the East. Some might even say that General Dwight Eisenhower was the greatest military genius in history. Maybe there should be some specific criteria that can be used to compare all and see what we come up with.

Julius Caesar. He came up with the turtle, the for runner of the modern main battle tank.
Next would be George Washington: He took a rag tag army and defeated the British Army ,which was the best army in the world at the, with it.
Next would be General Stonewall Jackson of the Confederate army whose tactics ran Union Army in circles.
Next would be General Gap of the North Vietnamese Army who used Stonewall Jackson's tactics against the American army in Vietnam.
Next would be Monty (Field Marshall Montgomery) who kept his out numbered out gunned British Army from getting surrounded and annihilated by Field Marshall Rommel's Africa Corps. Then drive Rommel's Africa Corps all the way back to Libya from Egypt and defeat it.
And on the sea it was:
Lord Nelson of the British Royal Navy.
Sir Francis Drake of the British Royal Navy
Admiral Halsey of the American Navy
Admiral Chester Nemeist (misspelled) of the American Navy.

Also, he had to pay for his wars as he went.

Patton without a doubt. He could take 5 tanks and whip upon 60 tanks and never lose a man. But those Military Leaders are gone thanks to politicians who now think they know how to run a war.
