There are two ways to make this style. However, they both start off the same. Collect all your hair in a high ponytail. You can do this by flipping your hair upside down and gathering all your hair in one spot. It's helpful to use a paddle brush for this step.
For the first way, wrap your elastic twice around your hair, then pull your ponytail half-way through the elastic. Pull some bits and pieces out from inside the half-ponytail so it's hanging down. Another cool thing is to leave out wisps around the nape of your neck.
For the second way, secure your elastic around your hair tightly into a pontyail.
To continue the second way, coil your hair around the base of your ponytail as if you were putting it in a ballerina bun. Then, flatten the bun to your head and secure with an elastic. Try pinning it with bobby pins- when done well, this helps the look a lot. Pull out bits and pieces and shake your head until you achieve the desired effect.

Tips
A decorative scrunchie always looks great around the base of the messy bun.
Don't be afraid to experiment- the messy bun can almost be called an art form, and there is no precise way to do it. It's just that- messy.
This can easily be turned into a romantic look by softly curling the pieces as they fall out of the bun so they are like tendrils.

Although this works better when wet, it can still be done with dry hair and look good. This also depends on the length of your hair.
Gather your hair like you would a ponytail. Twist your hair to desired tightness as long as the ends are closer to the top of your head. Secure with hair tie and adjust the ends of your hair as you desire.

If your hair is layered in the front at all, pull out a few strands and tuck behind your ear.

Variations on the messy bun can be anything that slightly resembles a bun but rather than use bobby pins like dancers use, just use a hair tie. Hair ties give your hair a looser, more comfortable, and casual look with more hairs sticking out of the bun.

A messy bun means you don't tighten it, tye your hair a little looser and let wisps of it hang all over. Bobby pins are place randomly around the bun area and make sure it's not perfect.
You can and should give it a few shots of hairspray but the idea is to look casual but still have the hair up. It's alot easier than the old perfect looking bun.

this is how i do a messy bun. i am ambidextrous, soi dont know if you would need to switch hands, as i do tend to favor my left hand.

1: get rubber band ready in right hand as if you were going to put your hair in a pony tail
2: gather your hair into your right hand, your rubber band should be around the middle of your palm (horizontally)
3: pull part of the ponytail through (you should have a little loop/bun/arch of hair ) with your left hand
4: twist rubber band once (left hand)
5:grab onto the loop (still with your left hand )
6:with your right hand , grab the excess hair (kind of like the mini ponytail sticking out)
7: using your right hand, wrap this part under the loop/bun/arch till the tips are at the top, facing up
8: add this part to the hair that you are already grabbing in your left hand
9: pull the rubber band over your knuckles (left hand)
10: let go :)

11:(optional) fix the little tips left at the top by pulling them out a bit more, pulling them slightly to each side, etc.

hope that helps. it was a bit difficult to explain without any visuals! :)

and again if you are a right-handed person, you might need to switch the whole thing around.

It just means do a bun. Y'know, without all the perfection. Start to pull it in a high ponytail and then just pull it halfway and leave it hanging in the messy bun. Poof.

What I do is this: A) i. positioned hair right into a ponytail however the final time you pull the hair by, only pull it 0.5 way so its in a loop bun ii. take random sections of hair from the bun and shove it in distinctive spots of the elastic around the bun iii. take the bun and form of dishevel it alongside with your hand just to make it extra messy (This many times takes me approximately 30 seconds- 2 minutes, reckoning on if im having a undesirable hair day or not) B) i. positioned hair right into a typical ponytail ii. take a small component of hair (of a few million inch thickness) and twist is around and around till it curls up by itself. try this with one hand and as quickly as that's twisted carry it with the different. iii. save doing this with all the sections of something of your ponytail. once you're carried out, take an elastic and wrap it around the bun so it won't fall out. iv. positioned some bobby-pins interior the places the place you think of that's falling out and voila! (This many times takes me approximately 2-5 minutes) solid success ?

Pull hair into ponytail. Then wrap another hair band holding the ends of the hair so the hair is folded in half, then in half again then it should look like to bubbly buns. Pull stray Pieces in a few places then secure with Bobbie pins so hair doesn't separate and look divided. Should look like a flower almost when finished.

yea, first u put ur hair into a ponytail (its better if its higher on your head) and u take ur hair and basicaly mess it up. like, scrunch it into the center of your pony. it works better if u have your hair wet. hope this helped, it works for me! have a fabulous day!
