Mine do it just prior to bedding down for the night. I always thought it was to expel any pent up energy from the day. We look at it like playtime and the kids really enjoy it too. The dogs go crazy running from room to room. Very Funny and fun to watch.

All animals have a fight or flight response that helps keep them safe in the face of danger. When animals live in a safe environment, they often get a build up of adrenalin and it can get set off by the slightest thing. It can be an unusual sound, sight, smell, or vibration, but when it happens they go running around like their tail is on fire. In my experience, cats are the worst. We had a deaf cat who would fluff up and go racing around the house like a white blurr knocking down stuff and scratching the furniture. We called it "Fluffy Tail" and just sort of moved anything valuable out of her way and laughed at her antics.
If it is a real problem, playing with your dog might help it work out some of its excess energy.

Sometimes when dog's are in the house all day left by themselves. ITs an outlet for them and a way to get there energy out. My Boxer dog does this and she because a spaz. Even after we play with her for the time she needs she still get's spaztic.

hehe, my toy chihuahua does it all the time. We say she is "turboing". Her little butt gets close to the ground and she runs like crazy all over. I'm assuming she needs to release some energy, as they only time she does it is if she hasn't gone out for a walk in a few days. Just my two cents.

my puppy does this too when he is excited. At first it scared me cause I thought he was chasing some invisible things. But I think he runs around to get my attention..and hoping that I would run around with him. Sometmes I do now. =)

They're born to run...need to run free outdoors every day to exercise those running muscles.

If they don't get out alot the build up energy that they just have to burn. That's one way.
