Asking costs 5, so shouldn't picking an answer be worth 5, so I can ask as many as I want?

You only get 3 for choosing the best answer. If you abandon your question, you loose your 5 points you spent to ask.
So choose wisely my dear, and gain back 3 of your 5 points or loose the entire 5 points altogether :)

Because that way the site would be open to spammers who simply post rubbish, pick best answer, post more rubbish, and lose no points.
Having question asking costing points means there are only so many times these spammers/trolls can do this before running out of points.
And what's the problem, you only need to answer one question for each one asked to maintain point levels if you always pick your own best answer
