I have a serious problem. I can't help but feel shallow. I feel like looks are the most important thing in life. To me, what's counts on the OUTSIDE is more important that what counts on the inside. It is because I have been brainwashed by the media, who always show hotties and glorify them, while average, fat, bald and ugly people are viewed as losers. How can I stop being so shallow?

Do you honestly want to make a change? Counseling will do the trick if you're serious about this. Realize that looks fade, and if a person doesn't have anything to back up the looks they have now, what will they have when those looks are gone? Also, many of these glorified people on television have had A LOT of plastic surgery. How real is their outside? And down the line, let's face it, more plastic surgery only does so much--Joan Rivers is proof of that. One more face lift and her eyes are going to touch--on the back of her head!

Something else you really need to do is think for yourself. If you're allowing the media to make your choices for you, then you're essentially their puppet. Is that really what you want to be? Look at your friends and your family. Are they all handsome and gorgeous? Probably not, but there's something about them that makes you care about them. Search that and find out why.

You can overcome this if you're truly serious about it, but it's going to take a lot of hard work.

Don't blame this on the media. You have free will. If you want to stop being shallow, you will. It's that simple.

You must know that ugly people can be just as beautiful on the inside, if not moreso, than the people who are beautiful on the outside. If you didn't, you wouldn't be asking this question.

If you want to see how beautiful people can be, volunteer somewhere and really get to know people who are making a difference in other people's lives.

Donald Trump, Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, and Seal have never been put on anyone's most beautiful list. I suggest you research all the beautiful people in the media and you will probably be very surprised at there personal accomplishments. While beauty has a lot to do with getting attention, if you have no stubstance you then become a wall flower. Try making goals and reaching them. Try helping other people because they need help. Try to stop looking in the mirror to see your own beauty. You sound like Cinderalla's step mother and she was destroyed in the end because her beauty was only skin deep.

I often find that in my life, most of the girls I am around go for the best looking guy. The guy with the most muscle on his arm, or the one that is best dressed. Often leaving the uglies like myself without game. So the best thing for you to do if to improve your personality, and don't worry about shallow women. There are shallow women and men, and that will never change.

I would say to first stop being involved so much in pop culture. Cut out the TV., the celebrity mags, the trashy web sites and try to learn about new things. It might also help change your life if you did some volunteer work. I know that sounds like some advice Dear Abby might give, but it really does work. You need to get outside of yourself.

Go to a few classes, force yourself to stop being shallow and make yourself believe your not shallow. And stop veiwing the media that glorifies the opposite sex. Also, if you look at porn. stop. It will feed the notions that only looks matter.

The best thing that you can do is be yourself. If you get caught up in being someone you're not, than people will think you're shallow.
