My 5 month old puppy doesn't bark much, but when he does it's at someone talking, a car starting up, strange random noises, etc. and I was wondering how we can stop him from barking over those types of things. Thanks!

Argh - those zap collars are so inhumane. I can't think of ONE instance where it'd be OK to use them. Once, a friend used one before she understood how cruel they are. Her dog got zapped from someone else's controller - and it took her MONTHS to get her dog to trust her again. Don't use them.
Reward your dog for the good things that you want. If he's barking in his crate, cover it when he barks. No need to chatter at him - just cover him. Remove the cover after a bit of silence, and then keep rewarding the silence. Cover him when he barks again - and repeat. He will get it and you didn't have to shock him into next week!

ZAP collars work well. It is a bark activated electric shock collar. You buy one and it comes with a dummy collar that is the same size and weight. You put the dummy collar on for a couple of weeks. Then you give the dog a bath, switch the collars and turn the real one on. When the dog barks, ZAP. The dog will learn pretty fast not to bark. OR...you can get one that works by remote control. When the dog barks...you command NO BARKING...if the dog does it again...you push the button and ZAP....the dog will learn when you say NO BARKING he had better shut up...... OR....you can spend $500 and get the dog debarked. He will still go thru the motions of barking but nothing will come out....

"The biggest problem with dog barking is not the barking itself; it is the length of time that the dog continues to bark that becomes the issue. Most dog owner's expect their pet to bark a couple of times to let them know if someone is approaching the house or to defend their territory and property. What neighbors don't want is the barking to go on for more than a couple of barks, especially if it is late at night or early in the morning..."
