You can try........You will never know until you try.!
I would imagine the landlord will not take to it very well....they never do.
Good Luck!
I hope you get the dog.
I don't think the landlord is responsible for your mental status, unless of course he is the cause.

The ADA says that you can't be discriminated against because of a disability. However, the dog must be recognized as a therapy dog. Certain dogs, such as seeing eye, are easy to prove how they assist. I have a friend who has a dog who alerts her before she is going to have a seizure. She lives in a "no-pets" apartment complex. She had to get the state to certify that her dog provides a specific function necessary to her disability. I would suggest contacting a group in your area that provides therapy dogs to find out what your state's requirements are in regards to proving the necessity of a dog. Perhaps your state's disability bureau would be able to provide some help. But unfortunately, just saying that you need a dog to help your depression typically isn't enough justification for an apartment manager. In any case, be sure to talk to a doctor about getting the appropriate medication for your depression -- it is literally a life saver. When you are asking about medication, ask him about the dog issue -- maybe he knows the answer.

If a dog is used for a service dog then no land lady or landlord can refuse to rent to you.But they have the right to increase your rent to cover any damage your dog will do while you live there. And there are people out there using dogs to help with their depression, some think that it is better then using drugs. tell your doctor you need a paper to prove that your dog is a service dog to you because it gives you a reason to even get up in the morning and you will have your paper . good luck

Mine did when I lived in public housing. I had a prescription from my Doctor stating that I have depression and would benefit from pet therapy and gave a copy to the housing authority. I never tried it with an individual landlord, but I would definitely give it a try.

By law if you get a note from a doctor and in turn get a license for your dog to be your therapy dog (very easy with doctors orders) your dog is allowed not only in a "no pets" apartment, but in stores, movie theaters, etc. Anywhere you want... provided he/she is well behaved.
I would look on petfinder.com for an older dog so that you know it's personality before bringing him/her home and possibly having complaints made for behavior or accidents in the public areas of the building.

if your doctor seriously thinks a pet (most likely a dog) would be a good thing for you, then yes, it is medically prescribed, many people are using pet therapy. If you do not want to go through the hassle of it, volunteer at a humane society.
If you can afford it, I'd fight for a dog, as they SERIOUSLY help depression. They make you get up and get out, simply because they NEED to go outside and potty, they make you think about something other than yourself (Gotta make sure the dog is properly fed, watered, and taken outside enough for exercise and potting, vet trips, dog parks will let you meet others etc....etc..).....I'd fight for the dog if the doc thinks it is a good idea.

Should probably find a place that allows pets and move.
I know thats not the easiest answer, but i think any landlord would fight that if they are trying to keep their expenses down by not allowing pets. Not to mention, many people have to choose places to live that dont allow animals if they have allergies, and they may complain.
Good luck!

Your 'dog' then MUST be a certified service dog in order for your landlord to allow it on the premises. And in order to get said service dog, you need a doctor's referral......

yes you can, my friend did it, and if you have a doctors note that says specifically that you should have a small animal then your landlord has to let you.
