I teach Russian and I quite like the RUSLAN Russian Course. There are 3 books accompanied by CDs, starting from complete beginner's level. Not sure if they deliver outside the UK though:

A really fun way of practising understanding spoken Russian is through short videos taken from popular Russian films:

The transcript of each scene is given and there's a glossary and notes on interesting grammar and cultural points.

First, the Russian for Dummies book is a piece of garbage--my friend's Russian wife threw it away when she looked at it, it is so bad. (On the very first page of text the three PhDs who wrote the book said that English and Russian are both derived from Sanskrit. Whoever gave these clowns their PhDs should be driven out of business because that is completely false and every first-year linguistics student knows it is false.)

Try the Pimsleur Russian course on CD. That is a very effective way to start communicating in Russian. You can learn to read and write later, but the Pimsleur course gets you speaking right away.

Hi freaky,

If you're just starting out, don't go and buy expensive books or software just yet. See what your local or university library has to offer, and you're welcome to check out my free website:

It's only been around for a short time but more lessons are coming soon.

Hope that helps,

Jonathon.
