It depends on the type of plastic!
Some can only go to landfill (like yoghurt pots).
I remember when I was a member of the British Association of Young Scientists (BAYS) and we went to a lecture where they let us do some injection moulding. It was a machine where you poured in plastic pellets, they heated until they melted inside the machine- and then the goo was squeezed into a mould. I made it into a tyre gauge by clamping on a bit of metal.

All plastics are capable of being recycled, but there are so many different types, that most if not all councils only arrange for a few of them.
Our local council accept plastic bottles, the Girl Guiding shop sells a bag which was made from recycled bottles.
I also have a compost bin which was made from recycled plastic.

Plastics have a number on the bottom, possibly in a triangle. That tells the type of plastic, 1-7. They all can be recycled, but it depends on your municipality and their market for the plastic. All plastics separately are chopped, melted, and remade into a plastic product. They can not go near food. Some products are: fibers used to make rugs, bottles for detergent, toys, construction fencing, plastic wood for park benches, stuffing for pillows and so on. What is needed for beter recycling is a market for the new products. Plastics that haveheld automotive fluids are not recycled.

Best way to recycle plastic or any other kind of trash is to reduce it to raw material. In the case of plastic you get hydrocarbons and chlorine. Both materials are very valuable.
