I was driving home from work and I was already in my apartment parking garage and about to park my van when I do not know how when I turned right I heard a horrible noise. The right rear part was hit by a wall and now my beautiful black van has a lot of white scratches. I pay full coverage and the collission coverage pays up to $20000 but it says that there is a $500 deductible. Do I have to pay that amount even if labor costs less then that? or I have to pay the $500 only if the cost of fixing the van is more than $20000. What do I have to say when reporting the accident?

You would have to pay the first $500 of any repairs, and then your insurance would cover beyond that, up to $20,000.

You should tell them just what happened. You were parking and accidentally struck the wall and damaged the the back of the vehicle.

If the cost of repairs is going to be less than your deductable, you'd be better off not even telling them since it could raise your rates.

The wall didn't move, so this was an at fault accident. For the repair for an at fault accident, you pay the first $500 (or whatever the deductible amount is) and the insurance pays anything over that up to your limit. If the cost is less than $500, you would just pay the costs. If you run into a tree tomorrow, you will pay the first $500 for that repair too. If it's less than, or close to the $500 mark, don't even bother to report it.

If the other party has Insurance, then their PD (Property Damage coverage) would be responsible to pay for your vehicle damages. If they had no insurance then you would be required to use your own insurance, and at that time you would be responsible for the 1K deductible, or in this instance as the damages did not exceed the deductible, the whole amount would be your responsibility. You could always file a small claim against them in court to try to get back what you paid out, but getting a court judgement and being able to enforce it are two different matters. In instance where your damages exceed whatever the other person's policy limits are, it is then better to file under your own insurance and let your insurance carrier subrogate the at fault's party for the money. Some insurance companys, after they verify coverages with the at fault party's insurance will frequently waive the deductible. But, it is always quicker to go through your own carrier.

It will depend on how deep the concrete scratched through the paint on your van but it might be something that can be buffed out at a detailing shop. If so, that is the best way to go.

If not and you proceed with an insurance claim you will pay the first $500 of repair, the rest will be processed against your policy. This will affect your rates and your premium will increase accordingly. If you have a record of accidents you are already paying higher premiums so don't put this one through as a claim. They are only scratches and while it's not pretty the vehicle is completely safe to drive. If you can't live with it then think long and hard about paying for this one yourself.

For some reason I think the wall was hit by your van, not the rear part of the van was "hit by a wall", but I think I understand.

First get estimates.
No matter what, you have to pay the first $500. If it only cost $300 to fix, then that's all you pay. If it costs $25000 to fix, then you pay $5500.
If the estimate is for $700 , you might want to consider not reporting to your insurance company at all, becaue your rates will probably go up. If you decide to report it, jsut explain what happened.

Just tell the truth....you were pulling into your garage and you hit the wall with the rear of your van.

You pay for the first $500 of damage, your insurance pays the rest. This amount include labors/parts, etc.

I love the way you phrase that.......the van was hit by a wall. That's funny.....
What your REALLY need to look our for are those trees and light poles that jump into your path. You got to have quick reflexes for them.
500 deductable means you pay the first 500 and they will pay the rest up to your max coverage. Most reputable body shops will absorb the deductable to get the work

The insurance pays nothing unless the amount is above 500 dollars. You are responsible for the first 500 dollars of any bill.
