E. coli or Escherichia coli is a normal flora of the large instestine and colon. The human body harbors them all their lives without getting sick but when the normal flora is disrupted (by many factors), it is when they become pathogenic to humans. They usually cause UTI or urinary tract infection, in pediatrics and adult population and women are more prone to UTI primarily because of anatomical position of the anus and the urethra.
