I received a clothing allowance check for $775.00. Taxes were deducted and net amount was $615.00. Can I list clothing purchases on my taxes or can I only list any amount over the $775.00 ? I have gotten conflicting answers and was wondering if anyone knows for sure. I'm too poor to hire an accountant.

Brian G's answer is very good, I just wanted to tell a short bible story.
When Christ would minister to the lowest of the low his disciples would follow and admire him. He would go and minister to whores and that was OK, he would minister to thieves and that was OK, he would minister to murderers and that was OK. Then one day he went to the tax collector home to eat and and his disciples went postal! Enough is enough, you can only go so low before you have gone to far. They said to him. Even then no one liked the S.O.B.s. Things haven't changed much since then.

The clothing allowance will be treated as regular earnings on your tax return. The only clothing you can deduct on your tax return are uniforms or specialized clothing that would not be worn in public by the average person. A TV news anchor gets a clothing allowance to look good on TV, but the suits he buys with that money can be worn in public (even if he doesn't), so they are not deductible. A nurses uniform is a specialized uniform, so it could be deducted.
