I think if you choose a good reputable breeder, any of these breeds would do well as a loving family pet. I gotta say tho, that Great Danes don't seem very "mean" to me. They have a reputation for being sweet dogs, so maybe going with one of the other two would serve your "want it to look mean" idea. I hear Mastiff's are great as a family pet and many people don't know much about the breed so assume them to be scarey, when in reality they are not.
Be sure to research each of these breeds to determine which one will be the best fit for your family's life style too.

No doubt about it - Great Danes are brilliant with children, gentle, tolerant and not at all dominant. They look huge and scary but are actualy very timid and not too bright. We have loved ours very much and have 4 kids age 13 to 2 who feel very safe when they have a Dane on their leash!
Rotties I have known have been a bit hit and miss with dominant types outnumbering the placid, submissives by about 6 to 1 !
Mastiffs need a lot of exercise.

All of them are suitable. They are all very nice dogs. A dogs breed does not determine whether or not it is aggressive. It mostly has to do with how it's owner treats it, and trains it. With all of these dogs being so big, socialization and training are Necessary. Look into all the breeds you like, and find out which one fits your life style best. Once you determine which breed you want, you can either start looking for a Good Responsible breeder, or check your local animal shelters. You can go to www.petfinder.com to see listings of different dogs that are available in your area. You can also visit local shelters that might not have their dogs listed on petfinder. To determine what breed you want, try going to http://dogbreedinfo.com/ to see the different characteristics of each breed. Good luck in finding your new dog!!

great dane, great dane, great dane! They are so laid back and easy goin. Incredibly easy to discipline due to their eagerness to please. Amazingly gentle for their size. Their only shortcoming is a depressingly short life span, (around 8 yrs.) As far as being good for security these dogs weigh an easy 150 -200 lbs. and when standing on their hind legs can tower to well over 6 ft tall.

I have two Siberian Huskies. One of them has a tan and black face (referred to as a "mask") with piercing blue eyes. She bears a strong resemblence to a wolf because of her markings, which in turn can make her look mean at times. In reality, she is an absolute sweetheart and does not have a mean bone in her body. Both of my dogs are excellent family dogs, and they both love kids as well as people of all ages.
