I really do not know how you can even get to work never mind work. When I had mine I was prostrate and could not even get out of bed for a pee. Ended up on morphine though after three back operations I am now fine.
Take my advice do no neglect it, as I would not like you to go what I went through and would not wish it on worst enemy. So get to your doctor and get him to sign you off and try and ask him to send you to see an orthopedic consultant. If you also have severe pain down the FRONT of your legs as well then you must SEEK advice soon.
You need bed rest for starters until you can get to see a consultant.
EDIT Try and see if you can get a loan of a tens machine. Tens machines are for pain management. http://www.tens-hire.co.uk
you can buy them from Boots the chemist for about £20.00 and there are such great for short term pain relief. Also have you tried cold compresses (garden peas) wrapped in a tea cloth and placed on the area of pain. Also lay on your side in bed and place a pillow in between your legs at the knees this takes some of the pressure off of your back and may help you to get some sleep.

Yes, I know how painful it is, I've had cervical surgery, fusion, plate and screws removing 2 discs and still have 3 more. Consider taking some time off of work, if it's possible, disc prolapse can get better or worse and cause bone spurs, nerve compression and even cause spinal chord problems. You can apply for disability income from social security if your doctor insists you take a prolonged rest. I'm sure your doctor will have the best advice for you, but some herniated discs can heal with proper attention in some cases. So sorry to hear you're in pain. Although I've been prescribed pain meds, I don't take them because of the addictive nature, so I've found that ibuprofen like Advil or Motrin can help to a certain degree. Feel better.

It wont kill you, just keep taking your ibuprofen and limit your movement until your operation date, Had a double prolapse myself and took GPs 3 years to decide it wasn't muscular so I know what I'm talking about. It is a chronic pain but manageable for the short term. I managed to pass a degree in the same 3 years so unless your job is physical you should manage. BTW I had an op to reduce in the disc fluid to ease the pressure on the nerves from the spine squeezed by the prolapsed portion of the discs. That was 15 years ago and it is still fine, so dont worry too much. Mr Gullen was the surgeon in London, dont know if he is still around. Top work though Look him up
