I plan on enlisting in the Marines soon and would really prefer to be stationed in Japan, is there anyway that you could somehow get that preference? I know that it is ultimately not my choice and I will be put anywhere but more for future reference. Just a add on to the question above.

Your chances of getting stationed in Japan are pretty high if you enlist in the Marines. When you choose your MOS(job), just make sure they are able to be stationed there. Depending on your MOS, you will get the choice of where you want to be stationed during school. You of course don't always get your choice but many Marines don't want to go to Japan so your chances are good. How much free time you have, really depends on your MOS, training, and deployment schedule.

It depends on your MOS and where you get stationed. You earn 2.5 days of leave a month. Those 30 days a year, you can do anything you want. You'll also have free time after work. The Marine Corps has 2 major bases in Japan, Iwokuni and Okinawa. When you go to MOS school, get #1 in your class. The #1 student is almost always given the duty station they ask for. Other than that, there is no way to guarentee duty station preference your first enlistment.

Once you are though basic its like a job. And with any job you are sent to the places they need you. The better you perform at your job the better perks you get, like choice of duty assignments. Do some research and find out what sort of specialist are needed in Japan and then go into those fields. That will increase your chances.

He is correct. Once you are done with basic and job skill training, its pretty normal. If you're single and young, you'll live in barracks on the base. If you're married, you be in military housing or be allowed to live in a house off base. You'll report to work and any required PT or details, but when you're off you can go hang out and do whatever you would normally be able to do. You'll get 30 days of vacation (leave) per year also.

Yes, you have free time, outside of a combat zone, of course. You may not get Japan on your first assignment but if you really want to go you can get there. Do well and people will help you get there.
