OK. If your parent's insurance is through one of their jobs... If you are no longer eligible based on full time student status, through your parents insurance plan, you will be offered COBRA. You, or your parents would have the option to continue paying for your insurance through a COBRA policy. Your parent carrying the insurance, will need to speak with their employer. COBRA can be quite expensive. Try looking for student insurance through your school.

I am a part time student and i have a part time job that i am trying to turn into a full time job in the near future however I am afraid that when i turn twenty-one at the end of this week i will be dropped from my parents Insurance and be left high and dry. Can i stay on my parent's insurance if i am only a part time student, and if not any suggestions for what to do would be greatly appreciated thank you.

First, check your parents insurance, you may have to be a full time student. There are company that offer short term health insurance for your circumstance. At 21 a health policy can be obtained for a very reasonable premium. Individual policies can be obtained, search the web for your state or call some local brokers in your area.

Most schools won't offer you insurance if you're not a full time student, and most policies won't keep covering you once you turn 21 if you're not a full time student. 1st step is to contact your current insurance policy (under your parents) and check their rules - if you're right and they stop coverage at 21 there are some great companies that offer inexpensive health insurance for students (yes, even PART TIME). Assurant's student health will cover you as long as you're enrolled in 1 college course, and they will even keep covering you once you graduate until you are working full time and get a policy to cover yourself. Email me if you want more info.

You'd really have to check your parents' policy. Some allow you to purchase the coverage thru COBRA - meaning you're paying for the priviledge of not being dropped by the plan - until age 23. Some plans do not. If their plan does not, speak to your college - sometimes they offer low-cost plans for their students. It would be basic coverage - and probably only cover major things like hospitalizations, but worth it for now, since the majority of bankrupcies come from hospitalizations. (If you need to see a private doctor, most of them will work out a payment deal with a patient who has no insurance.)
