I have been speaking with a recruiter about joining the Army. Have not set up a date to take ASVAP and go to MEPs yet, though I know it's coming up soon. I know their preference for people who are not on psychoactive drugs--so I neglected to tell him that I have been taking Klonopin (a benzodiazepine) as a sleep aid for a few years, but can easily stop taking the drug. However, I'm worried about how I will be tested at MEPs. Will the test come out negative because of this? How long will it take to leave my system once I've stopped taking the medication?

Ask the recruiter. There's no need to lie about it---even by omission.

2 things are recommended:

1) Tell the recruiter everything. If at all, you would be better off not given the chance to enlist than being kicked out for "fraudulent enlistment". The military takes that quite seriously.

2) Wait 4 - 6 weeks AFTER having stopped taking the drug to ensure it is completely out of your system. Remember, the longer, the better.

All the best to you!

The benzodiazepines are a class of drugs with sedative, hypnotic, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, amnestic and muscle relaxant properties. They are considered minor tranquilizers.

Yes they do, they test for all drugs but in the 1990's the MEP's didnt, but now they do... So I say wait at least 30+ days going to MEP's
