august of 2004 i was in a major auto accident that snapped my ankle in 3 places. I had to have 2 surgeries to correct the breaks. since the accident i have gained about 90 lbs and now am around 400 lbs. My ankle will always give me trouble the dr says and in about 4-5 years arthritis will be so bad that i will need a replacemnt or fusion. I understand that and accept that. But the worse problem is since the accident my lower back tightens up when I walk or bike, It gets so bad that I feeling like crying the pain is so intense. If I sit for 15 minutes or so it goes away but immediatelly come back if I return to the activities. What should I do? It feels muscular in nature. I went to the family doctor and he says to take pain pills and muscle relaxers, but I want to be pain free without drugs like that.

Moist heat..I recommend a shower as hot as you can stand it..just let it run over the painful area....but you can't take a shower everytime your back hurts!..yeah I know.keep some sort of heat with you, be it electric heat pad or one of those store bought air activated pads...heat last for 8 hours OR get yourself a T.E.N.S unit...it eliminates the pain signal at the source ..next to last resort is medication...have it on hand if you need it..and use it ! I promise you this..nobody will think you're a hero for suffering with the pain....and lastly..if you can't do any of the above then accept it...it's prob. going to be your new life long, but unwanted buddy.....I strongly recommend the TENS unit. you can buy them on ebay but better if you get it from you doctor who will provide triaining on it's use..Good luck with that back. Your problem may be more than muscular. Perhaps you would or should consider a C-scan to rule out anything serious. I thought my pain was due to a pinched nerve or inflammation. After a C-scan I was diagnosed with a bulge. I was taking pain killers and anti-inflammatory medication which did nothing to relieve the pain. It was even harder after I was diagnosed because according to doctors there is nothing for this. It's gotten better on it's own over the past two years but the problem is still there. Good Luck.

Pain pills are just for temporary relief. Look into an alternative medicine center or a chropractor. I have seen great results and have suffered from back pain for years. Also, even losing a few pounds may help relieve some stress on your back.

To be totally honest with you, your weight probably has something to do with your lower back pain. Carrying excess weight can cause back problems as well as having weak abdominal muscles. You're also most likley "favoring" your bad ankle which is throwing your body off kilter. Try seeing a chiropractor (yes, even it is muscular) and/or a medical massage therapist. Best wishes!
