and we have very sketchy information from the Detective's Bureau. We've called the Police Dept four times today to speak with a homocide detective just to have some information.
Being that they're unable to return our calls as soon as we'd like, (they have been very courteous to us, just not calling back) is there a possible suggestion to find out information via news media from the city of Milwaukee? Does anyone have any ideas?

I am just requesting alternative routes to find out information, no where did I ask for suggestions about a private investigation. I have the fullest confidence in the Dept, just would like info.

I'm very sorry to hear about your brother. Losing immidiate family is terrible and I've been there 3 times already, however, not with these circumstances.

As far as the homocide detectives not returning your calls as quickly as you'd like them to, this is understandable. They have to collect evidence from the scene, and be most certain it does not become 'tainted'...or in other words corrupted in any way, so it may be used in court. They have to collect statements from any possible witness who were there, or if none, they must investigate to find out if anyone will come forward. They have to subject people to rigerous interviewing to obtain any small bits of information that can or will be used in a court of law...and the most important, they have to use the evidence they collect to find the person who did this.

I understand the urgency you feel. I was trained in Law Enforcement so I know the procedure. As much as the police labs would like to come up with any DNA evidence overnight is a great thought, but impossible. Clues and evidence take quite some time to process, so you have to remain patient with law enforcement. It won't help them unless you have pertinent information that may lead to the guilty parties arrest.

Then, before anyone can take it to court, the prosecutor's office has to file with the court the charge for the arrest. They will estimate that charge by the type of act itself. Murder 1, 2, manslaughter or negligent homicide. Since you did not state how your brother was murdered, I cannot make this determination.

Sometimes it's a good idea to assist by just gathering all the information about your brothers friends, foes, those who may have seen him last before his death. Where was he prone to go, who did he hang out with. If you give the police all the information you possibly can regarding his activities, they will have a better idea of where to look. The wiseist thing to do is to sit down with other family members and create such a list. Include any addresses or phone numbers that your brother may have had. I'm certain that if he had a cell phone, the police have it in their possession and would be following up on those numbers which are in the memory.

Most importantly, stay calm and be as patient as you can. These things take time to get completed and done right. Any evidence that is tainted will be noted by the defense and thrown out of court when it does get there. So it's better to let them take a little more time then to rush in to anything.

The police do not call back because the detectives do have other cases to work on, as well as your brothers. Try to understand that anyone who has fallen from a suspicious death is having their cases investigated as well. Follow-up in each case is very important to each one. There are so many 'hot shot' defense attorneys who grab the slightest error on evidence submission and get the case dismissed or thrown out and the prisoner is set free. I had seen that on my days in a court room when in my internship with our county prosecutors office, in the victim advocate unit. Too much circumstancial evidence and not enough solid evidence will not be as successful as it would seem. They have to be certain they have a solid case. If you'd like, I'm sure your county/city prosecutor has a victim advocate unit such as the one in my state. You're always welcomed to call there and find out if that case has been filed, and if not, why not. Since they are lacking the most important element, 'the suspect' then it's going to take longer if no arrests have been made. However, check to see if they have a victim advocate service in their offices and set up an appointment to meet with them. Then, as soon as the information is received, they'll contact you.

But the police need to have all their ducks in a row. Even when they have a suspect, they cannot go in without a warrant to search their premises (to be all inclusive) or to make an arrest. The police must have 'reasonable suspicion' before they can even apply for the warrant, which doesn't take long as they can get one from any judge on any given day. If the warrrant is not all inclusive, then anyone they arrest will be let back out on the street and you don't want that.

The best of luck to you and I'll say some prayers for you and your family.

My sympathies to you and your family. I know it's tough at this early stage for the victims family. You want action and you want it now. Fact of the matter is that a good homicide investigation can take months and even years. It may seem to the average Joe that it's a slam dunk case because "they just know that guy did it". But, a good investigator has to run through every possible scenario that the Perpetrator can think of to trash the evidence and get out of a conviction. Each avenue the Investigator cuts off is one more step to getting a solid conviction out of the case. What the investigators don't need is the family of the victim putting pressure on them for speed of a conviction, You want quality not speed. I know this all stinks for the loved ones of the victim, but give the investigators some time to do their jobs. One thing you can do is reassure the investigator that if there is anything they need or anything you can do to help all they have to do is call you. Good luck and I hope they nail the dirt bag who did this to your family.

Sorry to hear about your brother. Good detectives live, eat and sleep a muder investigation. Sometimes they don't see their home for days until its solved. They cannot give you any information that may compromise the case because they want to put the culprit away not let them go on a technicality. For the same reasons you should avoid doing your own investigation. Let them do their job and all the facts will come out.

I'm terribly sorry for your loss.

Give the police time; the first 48 hours of a homicide investigation are critical, and they are likely doing everything they can to catch the killer and bring some justice to your family. It is hard not to know what is going on, but you will, in time. Try calling the public information office for the Police Department and see if they can help, but you will absolutely know by early next week what is going on. Give 'em time to do what they do...

I am sorry you had this happen to your brother..

But the police can not talk to you about anything, just yet..
There is very good reason's why they can't talk to you.. When they have info to share or need to know, they will contact you..

I am sure they know less right now then you do about what happend, since you knew him better.. Trust me, they can't talk to anyone, not even the papers..

When they have something, they will let you know..

Again, so sorry your family is going through this..

You should just deal with the police and not get tangled in any investigation that might compromise its integrity.
