It is normal to have favorites but Jacob could have exercised a lot more tact. If not for the sake of the ten then for the sake of Joseph. It all worked out really really well though and this is the mark of God's hand of blessing on a family.

If you, yourself, are the parent of children, or you grew up in a family with a bunch of other kids, then you know that favoritism happens in families. It just does. It's human nature, and parents do it. In my family, my father doted on my little sister, and my mother favored my baby brother. It's a fact of family life, so don't be surprised that Isaac favored Jacob, over Esau, and that Jacob favored Joseph.

In actuality, it was required in order for their to be an orderly transition of birth rights and inheritance. Their social custom dictated the first born son of the favorite wife received 2x the amount of any other heirs.
Moses changed this in the Torah, but that came 400 years later.

Not when you look at the track-record of his brothers. They tricked the men of Shechem into circumcising themselves, waited until they were all recovering from the procedure, and then wiped out most of the male population. They also threw Joseph down a well and faked his death. If these are any indicator of their day-to-day behavior, there is probably a reason why Joseph was the favorite.

Yes, it was wrong for Jacob to play favorites and resulted in a lot of sibling rivalry and heartache in the family.... that's the idea with the Bible stories.... show that real, ordinary people-- sinners-- also experienced a saving walk with God.... the same opportunity is available to you and me. Awesome!

Maybe Jacob thought that his other son looked a lot like the milkman.

It is much the same as the other denominations despising Catholics because they are of the Mother that the Father loves the best. The Blessed Virgin Mary. St. John stood beneath the cross with Mary and Jesus told him that she was his Mother and he told her that he was her son and it says "from then on he took her into his house and cared for her" This is the Catholic and people have been jealous of us ever since.

Yes.
If not for his favoritism, Joseph would never be hated by his brothers in the first place.
It was all his fault.
My mom favors my brother, and every time she does it in my face it makes me feel worthless.
How do you expect all the brothers felt?
