Don't laugh but the best way I foung to get rid of migraines (without medicine) is to lie down in a dark quiet room with something cold on your head (on the area that hurts) and something warm (electric heat pad, hot water bottle, etc.) on your feet. Stay lying like that as long as you can (I usually end up falling asleep!) and it should work. It's all about redirecting the blood flow away from your head.
Give it a try and I hope it works for you.
Otherwise I suggest ibuprofen or aspirin which helps to constrict the blood vessels that are putting pressure on nerves in your skull.
Good luck!

I wish I knew a home remedy but I don't. I can relate to migraines I get them all the time. I had medicine from the doc before and it didn't help me neither, because it said that you had to take the medicine before the headache started, but with migraines you never know when they are going to start. so now I just take 800 mg of motrin. it seems to help most of the time. all i can suggest is to put a warm or cool compress on your forehead, which ever feels better to you and just try to relax and not think of anything (I know when I start thinking of something it just makes my head hurt worse) and lay in a dark room. I sympathize with you because I know how your feeling right now. I know I really didn't give you any help, but I hope your headache goes away soon! Feel better :)

I have been put on Topamax to prevent migraines. I take it at night and they work for me really well. I was getting one daily just above my left eye but not severe ones like did have before. The med has stopped those now.
If the med the doctor gave you is not working, you should go back and let him know. Not telling him how is he supposed to know and how can he either readjust the dosage or change it?
Thats not fair to you or to him.
To get over one you are now having, dark room, Aleve if you have any, and a warm cloth on your forehead.

Hiya MaryQ,
Suffered migraines for years and tried allsorts orf remedies and medication but nothing worked.I did get some relief(slightly) from feverfew,(herbal tablets)after a while though back to the same.
After deciding to stop drinking diet cola and diet irn-bru and just drinking water my migraines did become less and less and find now that i can deal with them better. Couldn't believe after all those years that fizzy drink was part of the problem. Hope you get some relief as they can ruin your life. Trisha x

its not an advertisement but Excedrin for Migraines or any of the combination acetaminophen/aspirin and caffeine over the counter meds have worked as well for me as pain meds from the Dr. gentle pressure to your temples and a good neck rub also help. pressure in the webbed part of your hand between the thumb and index finger for about 5 minutes helps too. hope this helps i know how you feel.

I went to the doctor and was prescribed Depakote. take one daily and it helps to prevent them from occurring. before that, i found that the ice patches that they sell at local drug stores worked the best. just remove the paper, place it on ur forehead or temple and then try and lay down in a quiet place.
