Truely, it depends upon the dog. How sensitive they are to the stimulus. I have two large dogs. One won't even move once you put one on him. The other is a lab that will stand there & bark his head off while being shocked. See if you can find someone (maybe at work, your vets, etc...) that you can borrow it from before you buy it.
There's also the citronella collar. My lab hates it. It squirts a citronella scent up to their face when they bark.

They do work but they will only work when the collar is on, unless the dog thinks the punishment is coming from you. Dogs become collar wise.
This would take some time but you could get an e-collar and a dummy collar (or just put the battery in the collar backwards for two weeks) and have the dog wear the e-collar for all the time for a couple of weeks. You could also get a remote e-collar so that you can administer the correction for barking, but these cost quite a bit more. After a couple of weeks put the e-collar on the dog and when he starts barking tell him no bark and he should receive a shock, so he will associate the shock as punishment from you. You must be consistent with the no bark command at the same time as the shock otherwise the dog will realize it is only from the collar and will continue to bark when the e-collar is not in use.

Depends on the dog & IF the collars are used correctly. We do not have a problem with our dogs barking out of boredom. They only bark when someone comes to the house, but once they are told "That's enough", they quit & go about their business.
If it is a small breed I would first speak with your vet. Out neighbor had to get a collar for one of her German Shepherds who barked for lack of anything better to do. She bought one of the collars where the intensity increased if the dog did not stop barking. I thought that was an intelligent design, considering that many dogs do not actually bark at ANYTHING, they just hear a noise & go off & then will not shut up or settle back down. This collar allows the dog to bark a bit, but if it does NOT stop the current increases in intensity until the dogs stops....
I would look into one for a medium to large breed dog, or talk to your vet if the dog is a small breed. Some little dogs are just yappy & they require training to shut them up....

There are some circumstances when an anti-bark collar will help, and some in which it will not - see this link: http://www.fuzzytummy.com/tellmebarking.htm
Out of the different types of bark collars, a citronella spray collar is the most humane.

To solve a barking problem long-term, you'll need to figure out why your dog is barking, and address that problem. See these links for details:

Good luck!

Well, they might work - but it's b/c your dog is in pain and probablly scared to death b/c it doesn't understand what's going on. First of all, are you leaving your dog outside while you are gone? That's a bad move - if you dog is barking so much that your neighbors are complaining - they have probablly put up with it as long as possible before complaining. There is nothing worse than a loud barking dog that's not yours - try a crate inside your house. Your neighbors and your dog will appreciate it. Good luck

Keep your dogs on leashes (with the other end in YOUR HAND!) when they're outside, so you can stop them from barking. If they're outside dogs, then shame on you, and nothing will make them stop barking except for you bringing them into the house. If they're complaining about the barking while the dogs are in the house, get a local dog trainer to help you.

Remember, a tired dog is a happy and quiet dog. Take your dogs for long, long walks every day, so they won't be bored. They probably bark because they have nothing better to exert their energy on.

No, nothing can make a dog stop barking, other than soothing.

I tried one of those collars on my dog and I ended up returning it. Not only didn't it work well, but I thought it was cruel.

I would suggest keeping your dog inside.
