Don't do a make shift costume...wear a normal baby tee or cami with shorts and sneakers. A cowboy hat would keep you cool in the sun without looking lame like a baseball cap or a sun visor, and shades of course!
Leave the feather boa, and mask. The funky makeup for sure, wild colour eye shadow, jewelled accents, fake lashs and lipstick, fine.
But maybe you could try to get in a section, Carnival Sunday is a great time to rush the mas camps for last minute costumes.

I am warning you in advance, unless you are playing Jouvert mas (pre-dawn Monday morning), DO NOT wear a boa and mask. I feel you will look out of place if your makeshift costume does not fit in with the rest of the band.
If you jumping up in a band wear shorts, T-shirt/cami, comfortable sandals/sneakers, shades and water bottle. It is dry season and it wil be hot as hell. I don't know if I would go for a white T-shirt. When the sweat start pouring off of you, white can become very see through. Not a good thing when surrounded by happy drunks.
See if you can get into a Monday night band. The costumes are not too elaborate or expensive and you will get the chance to dress up.

Consider going to a bandhouse at the last moment & joining a band. You may pay less as the mas makers want to sell as much as they can. There are usually cancellations & you don't have to register with one of the largest bands. Pick a small or medium sized band and participate! Even if you choose to leave the band at some point and watch the larger bands, at least you got to have a time (you may have a ball and stay with the band!) Leave the t-shirt for jouvert. If you're willing to spend some money on a boa, makeup, t-shirt, and mask, you may as well fork over a few bucks to a small mas band.

You will have a ball - you can dress funky - it's carnival - anything goes. Try looking at some of the websites of carnival bands - you might get inspired by their themes and colors used. But remember it's going to be EXTREMELY HOT! so the mask might be a bit much for all day. You won't be out of place at all! Just make sure to have lots of fun and be safe.
