I downloaded a free trial version of Norton off of yahoo . . after the 30 days I decided that I din't care to much for it and went out and bought the 2007 version of McAfee PA Protection Plus. I went to the and and delete on my control panel and tried to remove the Norton and not all of it removed. I tried a few other things but finally had to go to my system restore and actually go to the date BEFORE I installed the free version of Norton to remove this from my computer. Onve removed I installed the McAfee and after I rebooted my system nothing works anymore. I can not get on the internet (Using my G/F now) tried to remove the McAfee and can't remove that (all that comes up is a blank box) and when I tried to go to system restore thru safe mode all that comes up there is a blank white box! no calender, no writing . . nothing. I called my ISP and they walked me thru a # of things but they are at a loss to understand why its not working as it is getting a ping . . any suggestions?

Ouch! Sorry to hear about your computer problems. Unfortunately, as you have discovered, Norton and McAfee software programs are hard to remove. As a result, each company has developed their own removal tool. You can find them at:

1. Norton http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

2. McAfee
http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq3.asp?docid=408294

However, since you have already try to remove the software, the above removal tools might not solve your problem. You might very will have to reinstall Windows.

I suggest you copy all your important files before doing anything else. Save them on to a CD or external hard drive. Afterwards, you can use the removal tools.

The removal tools do not require installation. Try going in to safe mode and use the removal tools one at a time. Use Norton removal tool and reboot. Next, use McAfee removal tool. See if this solves your problems. If not then you probably have to reinstall Windows. There are ways to reinstall Windows without destroying your data saved on your computer. If you want to know how to do this, drop me an e-mail and I can give links to those guides.

The most likely cause of the failure was the Norton software itself. There have been problems associated with uninstalling their software over the past 12 months, with many users unable to use their computers.

System Restore does not remove all the files associated with a particular installation, and the documentation recommends that you use Add/Remove Programs, or the uninstaller that comes with the software.

I gather from your remarks that you can still boot the computer, and login. If this is correct, then you need to completely backup your data files to CD or DVD if you can do that, or to another physical hard disk drive.

The best suggestion that I can make at this point is that you do a new install of your operating system. This requires the original installation media. You may have a recovery CD or DVD created when you first started the computer (this would be in the situation that you purchased the computer with the O/S already installed), and you could use that to clean the computer of the software that was installed afterward. If you have neither then you will have to find a friend who has the same Operating System with the original installation cd and use that to install, just using your installation key to validate the version of Windows you are using.

call symantec and have them walk you through removing al the components of symantec and then call mcafee and have them walk you through removing mcafee. You can then reinstall mcafee or get better virus protection from free.grisoft.com. this software is free and it works amazingly
