I have seen some show dogs with a number tattooed on their ear. It is a unique indentification number, like your Social Security number. Now days, more people use microchips, but they can be removed.
P.S. I could have tried a joke: He has started to go bad. The next step will be piercings. He probably smokes and drinks too.

My dogs and cats all have tattos in their one ear when I got them altered for identification purposes. I had letters put in there, but some people put numbers...phone #, birthdate...whatever they want. I did the first 4 letters of their names. I think you can go up to 4 letters/numbers. Tattoos are usually placed in the ear, or on the inner thigh.
Also..our SPCA will tattoo every dog as a way to show it has been altered, usually they just put an N for neutered. Did the SPCA your dog came from do it? If there is a scab, then the tattoo is still fairly new.

Its a simple identification some people use on their show animals... people use it for all different types of animals. I used to show dairy goats and we used to tattoo for identification and birth dates. Its a simple proceedure that uses a handheld crimper with needle stencils in the shapes of letters and numbers. Ink is applied to the skin and the ear is crimped. It's quick and I wish I could say painless but its over very quickly... like getting a shot. I'm sure your dog isn't tramatized by this.
Perhaps your pup will be the coolest of all her friends with her tough tat! lol

Sounds like the dog was ID tattooed. I am not sure how you can look this up. I think I would contact the SPCA that you got the dog from and tell them. Your new dog may be someones beloved pet that got lost. Good luck to you!

It is an identification tattoo, used by breeders and the AKC to track purebred dogs. I am not certain how you can track this dog back to his original owner, but the AKC may be able to help or give you some links to breed specific tattoo registries. This may lead to some ownership issues, but I think the SPCA will stand behind your right to keep the dog.

Purebred dogs are tattooed for identification. The breeder receives his number from AKC, the other numbers represent the year he was born and the # of the puppy for that year from that breeder.
