Hi, I think that it is good that you are looking for something to do instead....as you can't stop a behavior without replacing it with something. Just make sure that it is something socially acceptable that you can do anywhere....Deep breath, close your eyes and count for a minute, touch your wrist, pull your ear, whatever works for you. The important part though is that you seek help from your physician. Self harm is a stress relief for folks is my understanding, but it can easily become a habit. Get help as soon as possible.....Also, don't beat yourself up for self harm, instead praise yourself for each day that you don't self harm....focus on the positive. Good luck.

The best thing you could do for yourself is go to a therapist. Professional help is the best thing. Don't be embarrassed by your problem. There are MANY people out there with the same thing. The self harm probably occurs due to some other stressor in your life and instead of punching walls or taking hot showers..you hurt yourself. Sometimes as a way of punishing yourself and other times as a way of putting a finger on something that hurts. You really should seek treatment. you can find other ways of coping. If you decide not to get treament, and feel the need to continue to hurt yourself, then try snapping a rubberband around your wrist instead of cutting. It has the same affect but is less dangerous. I had the same problem as you and that's what my Dr. suggested. Good Luck and seek treatment. ASAP

See a therapist, talk to someone anyone really, most people arn't judgemental at least when there alone because they have all kinds of problems of there own. Most people have all kinds of random crazy crap that floats through there mind at one point or another, key is to realise they ae just thoughts that doesnt mean you have to act on them. And dont be ashamed to talk to some one most therapists deal with problems way weirder or more embaresing than self detructive behavior on a daily basis.

Realize that your desire or need to hurt yourself is an effort to make yourself feel pain, because the real pain buried inside you is too scarey or too painful to feel. The original pain, probably from abuse as a child is so overwhelming, if you start feeling it....you might never stop feeling it, or you might really hurt yourself or the person who hurt you, so....you hurt yourself to control how much pain you can take. it's about pain, emotional pain. you have to be willing to go through the original events with a therapist or someone strong, get to the source. you can stop hurting yourself one day at a time, one hour at a time, five minutes at a time. it's an addiction. all addictions are usedto cover up pain, and they create more pain. you think if i just cut one more time, then...........and it leaves you feeling worse , helpless and powerless to stop. ever tried any 12 step programs?

You can write, draw, or even seek therapy. At least you know you have a problem. That is the first step. Try seeking help. A therapist can help give you strategies, and talk about why you do what you do.

There are clinics you can go to for help. One of them is called S.A.F.E and is in naperville, IL. Look them up on the web. Don't suffer in silence. GO get help.

Try going for a run, working out, swimming, fishing, talking with someone. Buy some cheap toys and take it out them. There are a lot of ways to redirect yourself.

You know those pillows with the little beads filled inside of them? Buy one and squeeze all of your anger on it.
