My friend recorded my band playing live but it's really dark and has this really noticeable purple tint to it. I need a program that is able to change the brightness and color of an AVI file.

If you have the money Sony Vegas Video is a nice user friendly program that will do all that and more.

You can visit digitalfaq for a good article on video restoration.

If you want something thats free then Virtual dub has my highest recommendation.

You will have to look at the documentation for starters as it isn't the easiest program to just fall into.

Extract the downloaded zip file and run Virtual dub. FILE > OPEN VIDEO FILE and browse to your video (mpeg2 video will not work).

Now, goto Audio menu and make sure it says DIRECT STREAM COPY, unless you want to compress the audio, in which Case set it to full processing mode, and then AUDIO > COMPRESSION. Select your codec and bitrate of choice and click OK. You can fiddle with interleaving if you like.

Now goto VIDEO and select FULL PROCESSING MODE. AGAIN VIDEO, now select FILTERS. On the box that appears click ADD. Add and adjust all the filters you think you will need. Start with levels as i think it will help best for your video. The brightness and contrast filter has no preview so if you are going to use it guess the values. When you are done click, OK. Now goto VIDEO and select COMPRESSION. Select the codec that you want to encode to i.e. Divx or Xvid. Set the bitrate as high as you need it. the higher the bitrate the more space it will take.

Now goto FILE and select SAVE AS AVI. Type in a file name and click SAVE. It may take a few hours to process and encode.

That's the quick guide.

flow to "View/Enhancments" and each and each and every of the options for video image and sound will be there. if you're utilising the hot media participant left click on the total close to the "media participant" form.
