I have a tester, and when I plug it into the phone jack, it comes back as "reversed line". what does this mean?

I partially agree with the other two posters, yea it could be the green and red wires are backwards. Although most modern houseing and buildings no longer have old JK wireing most have the Minmuim of Cat3. I also agree with the wires terminated or spliced backwards between your phone and the telephone Central Office.

It is not however negative and positve.

It has to do with polarity, the average telephone, fax, or modem can work with the polarity being reversed as well as normal. It becomes a problem when one tries to use a DSL, ADSL, Digital telephone sets, LMR (land mobile radios), and other various circuits.

the positive and negative wire has been reversed between the source (ie central office, remote terminal) and your jack that you are testing. All phone equipment like sets, fax, computer, and answering machines should be able to handle both directions.

It means the red wire is where the green wire belongs and the green is where the red belongs. Not always a problem, but you should fix it if you can.
