BI: bodily injury coverage, covers injury to a 3rd person you legally are responsible for. For example, your limit is 15/30...this means $15K per person up to a maximum of $30K total. If you have 3 injured people, the combined amount paid can not exceed $30K (in this case, each person would receive $10K)
PD: covers damage to a 3rd person you legally owe. For example, if you have $25K limits, the MOST AmFam will pay total for vehicle repairs/rental/property damage is $25K. If the repairs exceed this amount, you are on the hook for the difference.
MED: medical payments coverage, 1st party coverage for covered driver/passengers in YOUR vehicle, regardless of fault.
For example, $1K limits....med pay will cover a MAXIMUM of $1K per covered person
UM: uninsured motorists coverage....YOU recover from AmFam what you would legally be entitled to recover for injury from an at fault uninsured driver, up to your policy limits (refer to bi limits example above). This coverage is ONLY for your injury, not property damage.
UIM: UNDERinsured motorists coverage...again, for injury only. Only this time, the at fault carrier's limits are LESS THAN the value of your total injury claim. Once you settle the b.i. with the at fault carrier, AmFam will offset your UIM award by this amount. For example, the value of your claim is $25K, the at fault party has 15/30 limits and they pay you the full $15K. YOUR UIM limits are 25/50....AmFam offsets the value of the $25K claim by $15K (what you've received) and pays you the difference, in this case, $10K.

What the first two posters said. You should also check to see if you have comprehensive coverage. That covers you for things such as damage not caused by a collision, or theft. Also, check the amount of coverage you have. If you just have the state minimums, consider boosting the amount of your liability and property damage coverage. It is a lot cheaper than you might think, and it could save you a bundle if you are ever involved in a crash.
