Golden Retrievers are great dogs, so are olde english sheepdogs, border collies, vislas, st bernards...well there are much more..herding, companion and hunting dogs.
but one thing is for certain...unless you know what you're doing don't get a terrier. They're stubborn, can be nasty and mega hyper. I personally think people should have a permit to own them, especially pitbulls and bull terriers because they require a lot of discipline and their families really need to be assertive with them otherwise they'll be viscious or untollerable.
But the answer...well it really depends on what type of dog or challenge you'd like.
My personal favorites are chiuhuahas though.

It all depends in what you want. Different breeds have different personalities.
I like the Chow because its loyal, its naturally clean indoors, it isn't prone to chewing the furniture, and a small fenced yard is plenty of room for it to play. It doesn't need a daily jog, just a walk is fine. It will bark at strangers and I feel much safer with my 2 chows inside with me. Just like I don't play games when it comes to caring for them, I know they won't play games if it ever comes to protecting me. They are great in the car. Sure they shed but that doesn't bother me...but it would be a problem for some people. Also, I don't have kids.
I couldn't deal with a golden retriever because my yard is too small and I don't have the time or the means to give it the exercise it needs.
Like I said, it just all depends on what you want in a dog and what your lifestyle permits.

I like Golden Retrievers, but I think Shih Tzu is the best breed. They are so furry and cute... Look here:
http://www.thedog-clubs.com/pup-ography.html
and find "Shih Tzu" and enjoy the cute pictures. Yay. I hope you like them.
By the way, you're so lucky. I don't have a dog, but I'm planning to get an Akita. (Last on the link I just gave you, I THINK. Or first.)

I THINK LABRADOR RETRIEVERS ARE THE BEST! I have a yellow and my boyfriend has a black and they are the smartest, most loving, loyal devoted and versatile dogs. My yellow is a 110 pound lap dog. They are both the greatest and I would not trade them for the world. My yellow will be two next month and the black is 7. All dogs are great.

I have an Australian Cattle Dog with (we think) some lab in him and he's a great dog! He's got the incredible smarts of a cattle dog and the patience with kids and love of water of a lab. He looks like a cattle dog (except his ears fold over instead of standing straight up) but he just lets the kids (we own a horse farm and we've always got little kids out here for riding lessons, pony parties, etc.) hang all over him and hug him and pull his ears and he doesn't even mind. He also loves to swim and can be very protective of us(his owners) but is very friendly when he gets to know you and is incredibly smart. He's a great companion. You pretty much have to have a pretty large area for cattle dogs to run though. Our dog, Dingo just runs our 40-acre horse farm like he's in charge of all of it! They probably need at least half of an acre to run and be happy.

It has been said by many people that mixed breed are the best dogs to own. Mainly because there is not the issue of continued inbreeding. Don't get me wrong there are many breeds that are good like the lab. My mix is blk lab with germ shep. But I hate the pit and rott. I would never own a mix of either.
