yes it's a natural reaction just as the body is about to go to sleep as it is relaxed .there is a tendency to spasmodically jerk as the muscles settle.you will see this in babies a lot and it gets less as time goes on and you get older..but it happens at any age..sometimes you don't notice it as you are too far into sleep.but sometimes you are not quite asleep and you abruptly wake up with a start..

I think everyone done that at some time or other. Yes it is freaky. But it something to do with neurons in your brain that pass electicity, just as you are going to sleep you get a sudden surge and it makes your body stiffen for a split second and then just relax, hence the jumping feeling. Ruins your sleep though doesn't it.

Haha, yeah it happens to me a lot, although in my dream I'm buckling rather than jumping, and then I have some sort of spasm on the bed as if I was flopping like a fish because, in my head, I buckled, resulting in my awakening in the middle of the night. Speaking of sleep, answering this question is making me feel tired. Better go catch some Z's! Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....

Yes!!! It happens when you are falling asleep. As you fall asleep your brain shuts down the feeling that you have in your legs etc. (otherwise you would never go to sleep). But the part of the brain that protects us in falls etc. is still awake, all of a sudden it tells your body that you are falling hence the sudden jerk.
PS it can also happen when you are addicted to drugs etc, and the drug is wearing off.

Yes, just as I'm going to sleep, something makes me jump and I wake up. Or, not exaclty in a dream, but kind of, I fall over and that makes me jump (in real life) and I wake up. Weird.

Yeah I do it all the time, usually when i'm falling asleep. Or sometimes in the middle of a dream I'll wake myself up when I jump. I've usually dreamt I've tripped up or something.

this is my scenario .... i go to sleep and somehow i manage to dream about kicking something ... and i actually do it in reality with sort of jerks in my legs .. this actually happened when i was 10 and i stopped getting it when i was 15 ... my dad is a paediatrician and he diagnosed me with ... myoclonic jerks ... it's a very mild form of seizure disorder ... he came to the diagnosis after taking an EEG ( recording electrical activity of ur brain simple procedure no pricking involved ) which was normal .
that's all i have to say iam studying paediatrics myself now and i would suggest u to get checked by a neurologist if this condition actually hampers ur peace ..

Yeah, I have done that once in a while. Once I was dreaming about kicking someone and I actually kicked out and broke my big toe on the wall. Ouch! It was very embarrassing having to explain it too! lol
