I've had shin splints and know they can be very painful. Both when walking, and sometimes worse, when sitting down. Yes, Ice does help and I've had physical therapy for them also. The therapists would massage my shins, then use an ultrasound with some kind of lubricant and massage the area. I was given a list of foot exercises to do every day, mostly by stretching and rotating my feet at different angles. This was tedious and helped a little.

The very best thing that happened to me was when I was fitted for orthotics. The podiatrist made a cast out of the imprint of both of my feet, and it was sent somewhere to make the orthotics that were custom made for me. I had 2 pairs made for both work and my tennis shoes, wear them all the time, and havn't had any pain for over 8 years now(knock on wood.) Orthotics are my savior.

I would check with a podiatrist about getting fit for orthotics. They can be expensive, but insurance might pay for them. I would also make absolutely sure that you are wearing the correct type of shoe. This is paramount. Make sure you have enough shock absorbtion on them and that they fit well. You might want to experiement with those foot cushions and gels to find the most comfortable fit. Hope this helps.

Ask your pharmacist; he'll tell you that many people use quinine capspules to stop having leg and foot cramps. Doctor has to prescribe them, but they're very inexpensive. Doctor will tell you to take as needed, but one capsule will stop muscle cramps for 6 to 12 months. Might use maybe 3 in a year.
