I have dark floors and LOVE THEM, but they show everything. I would probably go with Medium to get the color you want without the hassle.

If the rest of your house and decor is fancy or art deco you should go with dark floors. Darker accents those things better. If your house is more rustic or just fashionably decorated, you should go with medium. If the room is really small you should go with light though, the darker would make your room look smaller.
It also depends on your furniture, is it wood colored or painted or metal? Wood colored, have your stains almost match, but not perfectly, then everything would just blend together in a big blob.

Butterscotch is a nice warm (medium) color that's easy to decorate with. I stay away from Gunstock and other dull brown colors. They feel dated too quickly. Anything rich and warm (preferably with a little red in it) is usually pretty beautiful. But the REALLY beautiful floors today are Ebony floors with a high gloss shine. They're extremely dark, but all of the wood grain shows through. They just look rich and exciting, but small rooms can't usually handle that much dark.

I go with lighter colors, so try the medium. If you stain it dark, the room will look very ominous. The lighter the color, the more open the room feels. Of course, if you're trying for a movie room, then dark will work real well.

Dark. It makes that furniture and everything above it pop out.
