I had a recent loss (FREAKING LOSER chick stole my camera, cell phone, and MP3 player) out of state while visiting my dad in the hospital during heart surgery. Will my homeowners policy cover it.

I know...I could check my policy...but ya see... I am out of state with my dad in the hospital.

The chick stole it from the hospital ICU family waiting room. They have the whole thing on tape.

The standard homeowners policy DOES cover theft of your items, anywhere in the world, subject to policy terms and conditions. Sometimes there are limitations on electronic items, and mysterious disappearance is NOT covered, but as you have the theft on tape, and I'm assuming a police report, that's not an issue.

It IS subject to your homeowners deductible.

Sorry about your dad, hope he's doing ok.

Generally, renters policies are more different between states than they are between companies. In every state I can think of though, your personal belongings are covered anywhere in the world. Here's the sticky stuff though. If your deductible is higher than the actual monetary loss, there would be no point in claiming it. Also, unless you have a replacement cost provision (quite possibly a different name with state farm) then you would only get whatever the insurance company figured it was worth with depreciation figured in. (Any number they feel like making up.) Also, any claims you have on a property policy will change your risk class, meaning your rates will go up. Theft claims are about the worst thing for this. Fortunately, renter's policies tend to be pretty cheap. Also, most renter's policies only cover things outside of your listed residence for 10% of your policy limits. I wouldn't file a claim for a $250 camera. It's just not worth it. If your actual loss was far more than that, maybe you should.

You will have coverage for the theft but subject to policy limitations, deductible and depreciation hold back. Plus you run the risk of having your rates go up or getting dropped. Some homeowners companies will raise rates or drop you even for something where you did not contribute to the claim.

Consider the value of the items stolen compared to your deductible , possible rate increases etc.

Common sense, immediately contact your insurance company tollfree hot-line and establish the claim-NOW

Your deductible is probably more than the value of the items you mentioned.
Good luck
