The teenager's responsability level, safety, cost. Would you wear a helmet and safety gear. Would you ride on busy roads. Ask yourself these questions and you may understand your parents reasons.

In my opinion they are right. My first MTB bike was a $650 and lasted over 3 years. After that I switched to a $900 Trek and so on. So make it a gradual thing. I've seen people that go from a Supergo bike to a Dream Bike and end up leaving the bike on the garage after a couple of rides. Go to eBay and take a look. A lot of people buy compulsively and end up selling the bikes for much less. 1) Are you competing? 2) Are you aware that the bike wont make you faster? 3) Does your ridng habilities requires such and expensive bike? 4) Are you aware that a higher end bike requires more maintenance and ussually if a part breaks it is more expensive to replace? 5) How long have you been racing? 6) Do you already have a car? Think about it!!

It's is because in most places they are illegal. Neighborhoods, city streets, sidewalks, everywhere except on pirvate property, they are illegal. They probably don't want their kids wasitng money on something that is illegal. Or they don't want to pay something for their kids that sends their kids the message that it's okay to break the law.
