Because it can be a great career with promotion prospects and a pension. The Forces generally look after you reasonably well and so they should.
It is reasonably well paid though could be better. Young soldiers probably will take home around £750( may be more, not sure of the figure these days) after their food and lodgings are paid for. Now that might not seem a lot but I am talking about someone just starting out as a young 18 year old it's not too bad and remember that's pure spending money. By the time I pay my mortgage, bills and council tax etc I don't have that much a month to spend on myself each month.

You will travel depending on what you do in the services (not always to situations like Iraq and Afghanistan, don't forget these situations are recent occurrences). I spent 10 years in the Army and I quite enjoyed my time. I spent over half my service abroad in Germany,Gibraltar and Belize.
No I didn't join to kill people.

There are probably as many answers to this question as their are people enlisting.

I joined the British Army as a boy of 15 in 1957 because I wanted to travel and see something of the world. It really never entered my head that I may at some time be called upon to actually fight in a war.

The only war going on back then was the 'cold war'. I never saw any fighting. My first posting to Cyprus was spent mainly on the beach, swimming, drinking and sunbathing. My last posting in Germany was spent mainly having splendid holidays both in Germany and around Europe.

In all, I'd say my army career was a breeze.

I guess the same cannot be said of Army life today, what with Afghanistan and Iraq etc. The chances of being sent there if you're in the same regiment as me, Royal Signals, is very slim. We were not allowed within fifty miles of the enemy and worked in TOP SECRET establishments, listening and tracking the forces which would oppose us in what we thought would become World War Three. It never happened.

Well, if you think about it you do a few years in the Army then after those years are up you can go to college and they pay for it and you don't have to worry about health insurance for that time and when you are done you can either go into civil services or contracting jobs or just go to college your choice and if you get hurt or have any medical problems that you didn't have before you joined you get a % from the VA every month.

my daughter is doing her army training now.
She joined because she did not want to end up on drugs or drinking her life away, spending her salary on 'fashion' she wants something meaningfull out of her life. She is loving everything that the army is throwing at her, sleeping out in terrible weather etc. perhaps going to Iraq in April.
She is a beautifull and clever young lady who is willing to defend all of us if/when neccessary.

To serve a country that constantly turns their back on them. But keep going because their not interested in what People or the government think of them, there in it to watch their brothers back, and ensure the safety of those very people that turn against them.

My husband said he joined the Army to serve his country. If you want freedom you have to be willing to serve in the military to keep it.

Sorry, I can't think of even one.

Unless.....being mindless is a reason.

Mindless without reason. Yes, that sounds like the army.
