German Shepherds are herding dogs, and are bred to have a high prey drive. This means they like to chase, catch, and kill anything that they view as prey. You can redirect this behavior through training if you would like, but it will be very time consuming.

I once had a shepherd that loved to lay around outside. She'd sleep and birds would fly around her and squirrels and rabbits would get close, but if anything got too close, the dog was like a snake. She'd snatch it up and have it hanging out of her mouth in a split second. It's just their nature to go after anything that moves. It's the "predatory instinct" that kicks in. That's why it's always a good thing to keep running and screaming children far away from dogs.

German Shepherds are big dogs with lots of energy.Your dog chases because it is getting all of this energy out.

Don't be sad all shepherds chase birds. I knew one who lived in Wales and he wouldn't leave the birds alone. Particularly the barmaids at the local pub.
