Hi there,
just because he gave you a nick name does not necessarily mean you have to return his ( compliment??).
Nick names can be really endearing and "cute" but they can also be the subliminal start to a co- depend ant relationship, i know this point i make sounds kind of "over the top" I was in a relationship years ago and it unfolded like this " your not going out with your friends tonight and leaving me at home are you PUMPKIN" lol next thing i knew i couldn't do anything with my friends ( the ones she didn't like) and to make matters worse i started to do the same thing well the obvious happened we got sick of the sight of each other. our special little bond became a trap for the both of us.
Alternatively try ( he plays Hockey) try Puk.
good luck

Guys in general (especially big guys) do not like nicknames that include 'poo', or anything similar.
I would suggest names such as 'baby', 'stud', 'big boy', things that highlight his masculinity. Keep changing them too, don't stick to one.
Hope this helps!
:D
