There are really cheap places on Khaosarn Road (you pronounce it Kaosan) in Bangkok. Some of them small and dirty and cost only 5 bucks, some of them are quite good and cost 10-20 bucks. I alsways stay on Khaosarn. It's not a place for proper people but it's full of crazy foreigners and Thais and full of fun.

Take a guesthouse instead. Its more cheap, more friendly and you are more near the warm helpfull people. Most have breakfast also, even pools.
