I have a friend with light skin and the photo she took came out like she had white make up on!
Is there a way to darken it and make the photo look natural?

Yes. If you're using Photoshop, Start with selecting Image - Adjustments - Levels. Try Auto to have PS automatically get your adjustment started. There are slider controls on that window that will allow you to make highlight, midtone and shadow changes.

There is also the Dodge tool to help lighten specific areas.

If the photo is too overexposed, you might be out of luck but if it is only a little overexposed, go to the menu at the top of the screen and select Image - Adjustments - Curves

Click on the line in the curves at the centre and drag the line down a little until the image looks that way you want it. Click ok and you're done!

Maybe. It depends on how overexposed the photo is. If all the highlights are blown and all the detail is gone, no amount of Photoshop can put it back in.

If it's just a little overexposed and there's detail in the near highlights, then the answer is yes.

Is photography NOT art? Is Photoshop NOT useful in creating art? Well, considering that my media before Photoshop was photocollage, I would say, no to both. It has not made me lazy. It has allowed me to create things that were extremely difficult before then. I have, however, also become more interested in drawing as well over the years. Also, with Photoshop making photo editing so easy, it has forced me to create new challenges for myself. Photography is a medium and Photoshop is a tool. Do with it what you want.

a quick way to get back some weight is to duplicate the layer and set the mode on the top layer to multiply. Then with the eraser tool pick brush and adjust opacity as necessary to cut back some of the areas that may be too dark.

In photoshop you can make adjustments using the curves tool to make sections of the image darker, you can use the levels adjustment to adjust light and dark, and you can use the shadow/highlight tool as well. You can also use the tool to "burn" in the image - additionally burning-in and thereby additionally exposing her skin area only to make the skin look more like her own.
