He was de-clawed almost 2 weeks ago and was then boarded at the pet hospital. A couple of days after he was home he started to sneeze and wasn't very energetic. His paws are fine.
The vet said that some kitten have a type of herpes that remains dormant until a time of stress, like a surgery, and gave him some medicine. He's even more non-energetic. He usually follows us around and all he does is sit. I'm worried about my kitty.

His lungs are fine and he has been on Ammoxicillin after his surgery. We have had him about 2 years and he is about 7 years old. This is just really weird.

Hello,
I adopted a kitten from the Humane society almost 7 months ago. He was 2 months old. He started sneezing when I brought him home and one eye started watering and his ear turned in and he had a fever. I brought him in two days after his wellness checkup and he was diagnosed with herpes. They did a test that was sent away to a lab. I was shocked. I had never heard of it. It is common around kittens and very contagious with cats. It causes them to get upper respiratory infections. Stress will cause these flare ups. The stress could be from something different at home, to them being sick, etc...
When my kitty was diagnosed with the herpes, it took about 2 weeks before he became himself after the antibiotics.
I had to put my kitten on Lysine daily. It comes in a capsule and I mix it in his food. This is suppose to suppress his outbreaks. I also have to give him Interferon to help boost his immune system. I started that every other week and now he has other problems and I have had to double up on the Lysine and give him the Interferon daily.
I just found out he had Heartworms now, which for a cat are not treatable once they have it. They can treat the symptoms and hopefully if he has male heartworms, they will die and not reproduce and not multiply. He also had kidney problems because of the heartworms. I also have him on anti nausea medicine and prednisone to treat the symptoms of the heartworms. He lays around a lot too. He did a blood work up and found liver and kidney toxicity in my kitty. There is a chance the heartworms will die and he will recover from it. I sure hope so as this is the most expensive kitty I have ever owned. I cannot afford the surgery they want to do. (Exploratory).
I will pray that your kitty gets well. He can live a long life with herpes. I have done my research on herpes since I found out my kitten had it. My kitten is just about 9 months old now.

I'm assuming the vet put your cat on antibiotics for the virus. There are several types of feline cold viruses and herpes is in the same family, which can be dormant and then brought on by stress. Check with the vet, but it sounds like the meds are making him sleepy. Maybe there's some other type he can take instead.
It's also possible that he caught a virus while being boarded at the vets. If so, the antibiotics will probably take care of it. Make sure he has enough clean water to drink and keep an eye on how much he's eating. If your kitty has caught one of these viruses, his nose may be plugged up and he may not eat or drink because he can't smell the food. Especially with a little one, he can get dehydrated very quickly which can be dangerous.
So check back with the vet, and good luck to you.

Cats are prone to getting Upper Respiratory infections when they are stressed (being boarded would do it) The vet usually gives them an antibiotic which clears it up pretty quickly. As your vet said, it could be herpes, which isn't that big a deal but does cause sneezing, eye infections or dirty (boogers) nose :( You can get Lysine, an amino acid in capsule form, open it up & sprinkle it on your cats food. Look it up on Google there's a lot of info about it. I wouldn't worry too much, neither condition is serious or life threatenoing. Hope kitty feels better soon!!!

Kittens with a compromised immune system can catch colds just like humans can. He sounds sick. Be sure to finish all the medication the doctor gave you and take him back to the vet if he's not improving. He could have an upper respiratory infection, kennel cough, lots of different things. The vet needs to recheck him.

I would think maybe he picked up an upper respiratory infection while boarding rather than dormant herpes. Maybe you need to consult another vet. Is he on antibiotics now? That should clear up an URI...but think it is odd the vet brought up herpes as URI are much more common.

My cat does the same thing, and has done it ever since we adopted him. The cause is allergies. My cat throws "sneezing attacks" where he sneezes more than 15 times in a row quickly. You could try to get a medication from the vet to prevent it.

Your cat could have an upper respiratory infection. It's probably best to get him checked out at a vet's office.

It would be ironic if he became allergic to cats. But seriously, it could be allergies to something. It could be an upper respiratory infection. It could be other things. I'd take him to your vet and get him checked out.
