The Akkadians were the first people to mention a story about a 'great flood'....how is that possible if Noah and his family were the only ones to survive???

can't wait to hear these delusional and illogical answers.

from wikipedia:
"The story of a Great Flood sent by a deity or deities to destroy civilization as an act of divine retribution is a widespread theme in Greek and many other cultural myths. The stories of Noah and the ark in Genesis, Matsya in the Hindu Puranas, Deucalion in Greek mythology and Utnapishtim in the Epic of Gilgamesh are among the most familiar versions of these myths"

MYTHS. HAHAHAHAHHA

Ok. Everyone who has responded gave crap answers. You actually said it yourself. Those are widespread stories. So..you have two options. Either all are simply fictitious myths made up independently, or they are all corruptions of true events passed on from the original survivors. If the flood was true and the only people who survived were eight people who lived on an ark, then it makes perfect sense that all cultures should have some sort of flood story. After all, all their great grandparents and great great grandparents would have actually been the ones on the ark. Also all cultures should have some sort of creation story, which..oh my gosh, they DO! So without realizing it, you have brought to light some very important evidence of the truthfulness of the creation and flood story.

Now, if you say that the first people were the akkadians to write about it, that doesn't mean that it was copied from them, because they may have written about it before Moses recorded Genesis, however it would have been well after the actual flood happened. So they were simply the first to write down a story based on those true events, I still don't think their version is the most accurate though. So thanks for pointing that out. I couldn't have said it better myself. I hope this wasn't too delusional for you.

Oh no, I'm shaking in my boots... you mean Noah and his family were not the only ones to survive the great flood?... you mean something in the Bible might not be literally true?... oh wait... I'm not a foundamentalist (phew).

Galileo Galilei once said, "The Bible tells you how to go to heaven, not how the heavens go." So, I think it's possible that the Bible be true in so far as revealing all the truths necessary for salvation. If there are things that are not in accordance with each other (like what exact time the crucifixion started... remember it took a while for Jesus to die) then maybe these things just aren't important for salvation (Man... and to think all those people who broke off and formed their own church over what time Jesus died ... I'm being sarcastic!).

You know what a myth is? It is a historical fact that after being passed down orally takes on charasteristics of exclusivity and can often be embellished with fantastic stories. But didn't it strike you that the fact that all these cultures have this story that such an event might have happened? By the way, scientists have come up with evidence of a flooding near the Black Sea. In fact, they think that the Black Sea used to be smaller and that eventually the land in that area was flooded from the rising sea levels after the melting of the glaciars. So is it possible there was a great flood sometime in history... sure thing. Is it possible this "Noah" wasn't the only one to survive. I would say, definitely. Otherwise how did his family procreate afterwards (incest?... I don't think so). The Bible is not a text book of the origin of different tribes (sorry my foundamentalist friends).

FIRST OFF..
wikipedia entries are written by people, not historians, or the pope or anyone who would know anything about anything.

SECOND
the story of noah and the flood probably happened before the akkadians. The story was probably told through generations of people, which would explain how the akkadians had known about it.

Also, i find it incredibly interesting how many cultures through time have told stories about a great flood.
The navajo, the incans, the people who told the story of noah, and hundreds of other cultures all around the world have a story of a great flood.
that is quite intriguing, even if you dont believe in the bible.
because how could different cultures/groups of people tell, basically the same story, when each group had no communication or relation with one another???

it makes you think.

I believe that since the Bible was written by humans, that it is not perfect. *GASP!* I know, weird coming from a Christian. There is no evidence at this time to support the story in the Bible that the whole earth was flooded. HOWEVER there IS evidence that around the time that story was written, the Mesopotamia area (where many of the earth's inhabitants dwelled) was indeed flooded! It probably just SEEMED like the whole earth was being flooded to the person who wrote the book where the flood story is. I think there are other accounts of that same story, aren't there? Anyways, that's my two cents. Hope it helped.

It's awesome...I had a overwhelming feeling to be a better person. I changed so many things in my life. I wanted to know everything about Christianity, and about Jesus Christ. I could not get enough of reading the Bible. I read different versions and asked questions. It is a great feeling, to have the Holy Spirit in you, You love everyone, and you cry, alot! And you feel sorry for the people, who just don't get it!!!!

You do realize that all myths have some measure of truth in them, don't you? If not, how were they started?

Secondly, you do not seem to understand that your quote is a two-edged sword : it cuts both ways. Explain, please, how all these cultures, so far apart geographically, all agree on the essentials of the global flood story. I think it's because it actually happened. Do you have a better answer?

You're so concerned with destroying religion that you've choked on your own tounge. Your assertions only suggest that all religions relay around the same God, and that all prophecy and myth aligns as one.

Thank you for supporting theism, have a lovely day.

PS- If you'd like to have some sort of theism v. atheism, rationalism v. empiricism debate, I'd be happy to oblige you. Just send me a message, make an assertion, and I'd be happy to pick it apart. :)

Could it be, no, it couldn't? Noah and his family were the ancestors of all people everywhere? So that is why every civilization that developed thereafter had a story of the flood? No, how could that be?

Why is so hard for all you "Enlightened" individuals to fathom ? The Flood happened EARLY in Mans History. Noah, and his Family REPOPULATED The Earth. Therefore EVERY CIVILIZATION has a FLOOD ACCOUNT !

Noah and his family were the sole survivors of the flood. I don't care what wikipedia say, the bible has has precedence over it.
