Not sure what you mean by not what it used to be.

My grandfather served in WW2 When they would just send waves of men running through clouds of bullets because if you send enough some will get through.

My uncle ran dogs in Vietnam and has told us some sick stories about the stuff they did over there. He claims it was OK to rape girls because they were going to kill everyone in the village anyway. And other sick cr@p of that nature.

And this conflict like all others is just a bunch of hate filled brainwashed people murdering and torturing others.

Now is just like always. Nothing ever changes.

To say the U.S. military is 'NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE' is an understatement. They have come a long way since just the 1960's when I first went in. The social advancements alone are awesome. I've been stationed with blacks and Filippinos who told me about when they joned they could only be cooks and stewards (serving the officers) or laundrymen. The military has opened wide to the many ethnic groups. Women are much more prominent and have more opportunities than in the 60's. The technology of the U.S. military is second to none. We OLD TIMERS also say, "IT AIN'T LIKE IT USED TO BE." I spent a few months working closely with some Navy personnel at the Navy's Second Fleet HQ and was blown away by the advancements we have made, technologically and other wise. We've been able to cut down on the number of men and women required to run ships (for example) and shore commands. Speaking from a Navy background, the jobs have become more technical and less labor intensive. Ratings have been combined (e.g. data processing and radio ratings have combined to become INFORMATION TECHS) and become more simplified. I would have to say YES, the U.S. MILITARY IS NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE, but in a POSITIVE way. Leave it to the liberal media to distort the TRUTH as always. They can't even keep the facts straight. Here in the east coast's largest Navy area, once they were talking about the USS AMERICA CV-66 (which was deommissioned, taken out and sunk) and they were showing a film clip with the USS NIMITZ CVN-68 (a completely different class of air craft carrier) going by with the number clearly visible on the 'island.' There have been many other instances here of mis-identifying aircraft and even personnel (a second class bosn's mate was identified as an ENSIGN..not even the same UNIFORM!). I do NOT trust the media in what they pass as facts.

Yes, I believe you are being naive and yes, the media is distorting the truth to fit their agenda. I am currently serving in the military and I have served in Iraq. In 2008 I am scheduled to go to Afghanistan. I also served 6yrs on active duty. Now I know ALL that and $1.50 will get me a cup of coffee at 7-11. I am also not hoping for praise.

I mention the above to hopefully give grounds and support for my views. Those views are noted here: 1)We, the U.S.A., has the most intelligent, most highly trained and equiped military in the entire world. 2) We, the U.S. military, are continually trained on Code of Conduct issues, treatment of POWs, etc. 3) We are one of the few nations that actually follows the Geneva Convention. 4) We are also one of the very few nations that will fight a combatant until they do not have the capability to fiight than fight to save their lives by giving them blood and the best medical services available.

Now with that said, yes I do recognize that there are bad apples and the media will exploit those. I appreciate the desire that it seems you have to find the truth because it is out there. Remember, there have only been two people who have ever died to save the typical person: Jesus Christ die for our souls and the American soldier died for our freedom.

Partly it's a media distortion, but partly it's that Americans are so used to our own way of life that most of us can't even imagine what it's like to live in an environment like that. It changes people.

It's wonderful to have ideals, but never forget how terrible some people have it, how dangerous it is to simply exist in some places.

Well, let's see... the Iraqi soldiers found three mortars in the vehicle... clearly an indication that the men they stopped were counter-insurgents... What did you want the Iraqis to do.... KISS'EM?? It's too bad they didn't shoot'em on the spot. And the U.S. troops egging them on is understandable... It means that at three potentially leahal wepons won't be used to make IED's.

It WAR... If you've never been in combat, you have no idea what happens, and therefore little knowledge to base your opinions upon.

It would be if we turned them loose. This crap of second guessing everything they do on the battlefield makes them not really go that hard.
