I am 15, right now I live in Canada and I want to go to university in the US. Probably UNC or Duke. But I would like to stay in the US after I have finished university, and I can get a job and green card.

But I have heard that they will not let a person into the US on a student visa if they know the person has the intent to stay in the US after university. I have also heard that I cannot actually apply for a green card when in the US on a student visa, even if an employer is sponsering me. I really want to live in the US after I have finished university there (I really don't want to go to a Canadian university), so what would be the best thing for me to do if they will not let me stay after university? I have family in North Carolina but they are not immediate family. So is it even possible to do what I would like to do? I REALLY want to live in the US, it's like my long term goal, so please tell me there is some hope that I can still get in?

A student visa (F-1) is only for studying. You can only work in special occasions. The point is to study. You cannot change from an F-1 to Permanent Residency. However, after you receive your Bachelor's you can apply for a work visa (H-1B) and THEN go for your PR. H-1B visa holders can have "dual intent" of working and applying for PR. However, H-1Bs are hard to get, so keep that in mind.

I think I already answered one of your questions a few weeks ago. Really, you need to worry about one thing at a time. There's no way you're gonna get an PR without the H-1B. And there's no way you're gonna get the H-1B without a Bachelor's (and in your case an F-1 visa). And there's no way you're gonna get your F-1 visa without spending more time studying (and taking appropriate tests like the SATs) and less time worrying about something 10 years in the future!

I live in Canada and I also wanna go to an American university. Well, you can apply for an American university in grade 12 (you also have to give some tests) and it wont be a hastle to get a student visa as well. But it might be difficult for u to get a green card. It depends on your career. If there is a huge demand of your career in the US then u could easily get a job and green card. Anways, Good Luck!

Yes you can adjust status once in the US, legally. Just keep on maintaining your status once legally admitted as a student. It should take some time but last I heard it takes about three to four years to get your degree. Good Luck!
