First of all yes, it's best to have her spayed. It reduces the risk of cancers and a serious uterine infection called Pyometra. There are thousands of unwanted dogs in the world and there's no reason for there to be more.
You dog will be in heat for about 3 weeks as the other posters said. However she will NOT go in heat once a month until she gets pregnant!!! A female dog will (on average) go into heat once every 6-8 months. Good luck!

Your dog is in heat. Female dogs go in heat about 2 times a year, and it lasts about 3 wks. The smell of the blood you see is what attracts the male dogs.
Its better to get your dog spayed for several reasons. First of all, it prevents unwanted puppies. Even if she is an indoor dog she may rush out the door sometime and find a male dog. Also, spaying prevents cancers of her reproductive system. Third, many counties have laws concerning "unaltered" animals. If an unaltered animal gets off your property you may be subject to fines.
You can buy diapers for her to wear until you get her to the vet. These will keep the blood from getting on things if she is an inside dog. You should be able to buy them at any pet store.
Most cities have Spay and Neuter Clinics. Look in the yellow pages or call the animal shelter to get the phone number. The clinics will spay for less cost than the vet.

I reckon u should get these diapers they make for dogs, but u should get them @ the pet store .Female dogs go into heat about every 6 months.
Heat, or estrus, is preceded by proestrus during which a dog will
have vulvar swelling and vaginal bleeding. Proestrus lasts 7-9 days. Then she will be in true estrus, or standing heat, when she will allow a male dog to breed her. This lasts another 7-9 days. The following week or so she is going out of heat and the vulvar swelling will gradually subside. The whole process takes about 3 weeks.

You should definatly get your dog spayed. Most vet clinics charge more if the dog is in heat during the time of the surgery, though, so you might want to wait till she's out of heat to get her spayed.
In the meantime you can buy doggie diapers for her to wear so she doesn't leak all over your house.

Dogs don't have periods, they have heat cycles. A heat cycle usually occurs every 6 months and lasts for 21 days. Yes it is much better to get her spayed. She will be much happier & healthier for it. She won't go through heat cycles, she won't accidently get pregnant, she won't get reproductive cancers, she won't get pyometria, a very serious often fatal uterine infection, she will be at a dramaticly decreases risk for mamamry cancer.

Hello. Your dog is in heat, and it wii last for three weeks. She is one week coming in, one week where she will try to become pregnant, and one week going out. She con become pregnant any time while she is in heat. If your dog does not become preg.. she continue to come in heat every month untill she does. If you do not wish to have puppies, it will be best to have her spayed. However, it would be wise to keep her pinned up until this cycle is over, and then visit the vet. I dont think they have birth control for dogs, but who knows??? Diana

your dog will come into heat once a month ..you will have to keep her penned in the house, and will likely have male dogs hounding your home day and night while she is in heat.
Getting your dog spayed will prevent uterine and overian cancer, breast cancer (yes, dogs can get it to) and will calm her behavior down and make working with her so much nicer for her and for you.
Getting your dog spayed will also prevent puppies from ending up euthanised at the pound, abused, neglected, tied up in someones yard and ignored. (not to mention stopping little blood droplets from staining your rug once a month every month for the rest of her life!)
