Previewing pictures, reviewing pictures, zooming the lens in or out, and flash are all heavy demands on the batteries. Also, when you're out in the cold, try to keep your camera warm as much as possible, or carry an extra battery in a warm pocket. Cold drains batteries faster.
One more way to save battery power is to get a card reader for loading your pictures to your camera. All you'd have to do is pop out the card and stick it into the card reader, and your camera can stay off while you load pictures.

The LCD screen is usually the biggest power drain. The screen, as you've probably figured out, is used to frame and review the pictures taken. If you want to save on power drain, try using the optical viewfinder instead.
The flash also drains the battery. However, there isn't always a convienent way to work around from using the flash.
Batteries usually take a few recharge cycles to ramp to full capacity. To maintain your batteries, charge only after you've drained it to reduce any residual memory effects.

Well, the function that drains the digital camera batteries the fastest would be reviewing your pictures that you've taken. Typically, any camera will drain batteries quickly because they have a lot of power, but if you don't review your pictures until you upload them to your computer, your batteries will live longer.

Generally the worst offenders are, roughly in order 1) using the view screen to compose the photo, 2) reviewing photos already taken, and 3) using the flash.
Turn off the view screen when your are not going to take a picture right away, and turn offf the flash when it's not really dark.
Also, new batteries take several charging cycles to take a full charge based on my experience

The LCD screen drains your batteries more than anything else. Use your viewfinder as much as possible. Taking a lot of flash shots will also quicken battery life.
