The main concern for them is power, money and control. Sadly the earth is not a great concern as it is not a short term concern. They unfortunately overlook the fact that we are not separate from nature and that nature's backlash is not something to be overlooked or treated lightly, we are at the mercy of it. It seems that until a major calamity happens they may not do anything.

There are a lot of very concerned citizens in the U.S. who are not happy about our leadership's decisions with regards to the environment. Our only recourse though is to vote them out of office. We got a good start on that this past November. Here's hoping we can continue the trend in 2008. I can guarantee to you that if Hillary or another Dem wins, the U.S. will sign on to the Kyoto Protocols, and make much bigger efforts to reduce pollution.
Sorry that we have a good ole' boy for a President who doesn't listen, and also sorry that we have some people who are moronic and stubborn enough to ignore science and reports that the rest of the world agrees on... but not all of us are like that here.
EDIT: to the poster above me, the U.S. is still the single largest polluter, even ahead of China, which has something like 4-5 times our population. They may not have regulations for factories like we do, but they're also not polluting like we do. And as for supporting allegations.... LOOK AROUND. Everywhere you look, there is evidence that the U.S. has dropped the ball here.

The USA has spent millions $$$$$$$ on high grade filters and pollution control on our coal fired plants.
China has none and in some cities, the people rarely see the sun because coal smoke blocks it out.
Many US factories lost business because products became too expensive with pollution controls but
Other countries let the factories go without any, so they get the business.
What facts do you have to support your allegation ?
Additional note: This is not to say that all is good,
The USA should do a LOT more, but the statement that they can 'not be bothered' . . is out of touch with reality.

Cutting down on pollution would cost major companies a lot of money and put them at a disadvangate to their competitors.
Due to the way that politicians are brought to power in America large corporations have a lot of say as to American policy.
Put these two factors together with the ignorance of the American public (who are fed propaganda daily by the One Eyed God they call Television) and I don't think that America will be too bothered about pollution until it starts effecting the bank balances of large corporations.

Yet the US spends the most in pollution control while most countries don't spend a dime. Get some hard core facts before making such comments. Your question shows your ignorance.
