It is perfectly okay to let them eat food when they are ready, but if you are giving them this to try and take them from mommy, yes...waaaaay too early!
Mom teaches them social behaviors, confidence, etc..if you take them away to early, you will hurt the pups chances of having a good doggy life..humans feed small puppies very confusing messages-therefore they need to be with mom to learn everything they will need to be great doggies...I believe most behaviorists suggest puppies stay with mamma 6-8 weeks...the more the better.

Your ***** should be on puppy food herself, and, in my experience, 3 week old pups start licking Mum's food anyway. It's then that I really mash it (be prepared for a mess!) Proper puppy food is far preferable to milk - they are already getting the best milk in the world from Mum. At 3 weeks my girls usually leave the pups for short intervals, to get a rest from them. This is perfectly normal behaviour. The drain on her resources is absolutely huge at this time, mine will eat anything up to 9 times a day. Rearing pups properly is costly, but it's your responsibilty to ensure that this litter thrives, and Mum doesn't come out of it all looking like skin and bone. Nick the ends of the puppies nails too, Mum is going to start getting scratches otherwise. Everyone is going to give you a different answer on weaning, it's a controversial subject! My vet says wean at 6 weeks, and let pups go to new owners at 7 weeks, simply because it's the best age for them to bond with the new owner. I judge my pups readiness individually, I don't think there is a hard and fast rule. Even the most devoted Mums reach a point that they've had enough. I don't ever remove Mum from pups, I allow her to know when she wants to get away from the little horrors!

All my pups, when I first got them at around 10weeks, were given Lactol puppy milk which is the closest thing to 'mum's'. They were already weaned, of course, so I wouldn't advise taking your pups off mum too soon.
A very good 'starter' for your pups is cereal mixed with a little Lactol or warm water. Farley's rusks are great as is Farlene. Try to avoid cow's milk as this can cause 'the runs' but, if you really want to mix in a little with some cereal, make sure you dilute it with water. I know 'mum' can get very tired while feeding. Perhaps you could construct some kind of 'platform' for her which she could lie on sometimes; in this way she would get a little rest from her pups but still be at hand.
Happy to help, Mo

well at this age you should be starting to wean them onto puppy food in any case. How come you had a litter when you don't seem to know anything about puppy rearing? You cannot expect them to survive at 3 weeks old on just the mother's milk. They NEED to start eating puppy food now.
I hope you are planning to spay the b1tch in 3 months time.

It has actually recently been found that pups benefit from staying with their Mom until 10-12 weeks. Even 8 weeks is considered too early now.
Yes they're weaned by that age, but they have not yet learned proper socialization such as bite inhibition. You can start supplementing their food now, but don't try weaning them just yet.
And please do the responsible thing at keep them with Mom and littermates longer than 6-8 weeks!

What occurred to the mother and other siblings? A dog wants it's mothers milk. You don't supply a puppy usual milk. This puppy is just not going to live, unless you discover a vet and get him there quite rapid.

What occurred to the mum and different siblings? A doggy desires it is moms milk. you do not provide a doggy common milk. This doggy will no longer stay, except you hit upon a vet and get him there really quickly.

Have you tried feeding Mum more often? 5 meals a day won't hurt if she's feeding a litter; and use a top quality ration for lactating females, not pet food which is 80% water.
