It depends on what you want to do. If you are trying to lighten dark hair, do highlights, cover really stubborn gray, or if your hair is really damaged, you're better off going to a professional. If you only want to perk up your color or darken it then there's no substantial difference and you can save money doing it yourself. I've had hair disasters from getting mine professionally colored because of stylists who didn't listen to what I wanted and thought I'd "just love" their ideas, so there's no guarantee that getting it done professionally will make it turn out like you want.

I went from coloring my hair (it started getting gray) to having it professionally foiled. I get a partial foil (just the top half) and it is not so expensive. She gives me highlights and lowlights so it looks very natural and the grow-out is minimal. I have it done about 3 times a year. As for solid color, I think the box works as well as the professional. It is a pain to do it yourself though. Maybe your husband wants to help out? A sweet time of bonding!

Definitely get it colored professionally. It will look great at it won't damage your hair like the box color. The box stuff just damages and dries your hair out. Going to the salon to get you hair done does take long but the end result is beautiful, shiny and healthy looking hair. Good luck.

If you get the right hairdresser than it IS worth it. Believe me. It also depends on what you want to do.
If your hair is dark and you want to go blond or highlight blond go have it professionally done.
Just adding some new tones or deepening color or covering gray probably can be done at home and look good with experience.
I have dark brown hair and I will never put bleach in again myself. It looked so much better when my hairdresser did it for me....believe me!

Get your hair done professionally if you're doing any kind of dramatic change, or if you're hair is really damaged or otherwise screwed up. If you're doing a subtle change like from medium brown to medium auburn then just do it at home.

I think it depends on what your getting done. If it is just dyed one color....save your money by doing it yourself (or a friend). If its something more difficult like lowlights or highlights....I would definitely get it done professionally. You can call around and find a place ( not like cost cutters) for a pretty reasonable price.

yes it believe it is worth it. i can't tell you how many times my hair has accidentally turned orange or green or bright yellow or GRAYISH BLUE. it's just that they show you colors that go best with your skin tone and your hair color you already have. its usually about 200 where i go for cut color wash and style. its well worth it though so give it a try and good luck if you don't!!

I think it is definitly worth it you will notice the difference and you need to treat yourself and the color will be more customized for you than the one in the box.
