Say for a picture of a field of flowers, how can you make just the blooms be in color and everything else in just a greyscale mode? I know there are some wedding pictures with everything black and white with just the boquet in color, and I'm just wondering how to go about doing that.

Hey no problem I can help you out,
First open the photo in photoshop. Make sure that the tool box with layers is open. At the bottom of that box it will have a button with a circle cut in half. If you put your mouse over it, it should say "create new fill or adjustment layer." click it. You'll get different options. Select Hue/Saturation color. When the new box opens up change the saturation # to -100. Your picture will now be in black and white click ok. Now in your tool box click the eraser tool. Now with the eraser go over whatever you want to retain color. See if that works for you.

I agree with everyone on making another layer but not about the erasure tool. That is an option but try this. On your layers window drag the "background" layer to the new layer icon which copies the layer. Do this twice. Delete the origonal background layer.

Now, one layerrs is on top of ther other right? Desaturate the bottom layer so that it is black and white and leave the top layer alone for now.

Next go to "Select" at the top. On the drop down menu click "color range" for the top layer. It will give you another window in which you can select different colors with the eyedropper. And can increase and decrease the sensitivity on this. Click on the most prominant color in the buds and click ok. This will "markee" everything the picture that is that color.

Next, go back to the "select" menu and click "inverse" this will select everything BUT the buds. Simple delete the selection by hitting delete or edit/delete and all that will be left will be your buds. They will be perfectly lined up over the now black and white image beneath.

If some extra things were selected that you didnt want you can use the eraser tool to get rid of them with a lot less tedious work.

If you save your image as a jpeg it will merge or layers or you can "merge visible" on the layers tool by clicking the circle with the triangle in it.

The other method everyone else told you will work. Its just good to know how to automatically select a certain color.

Good luck.

Black n White w/color process

Your procedure will depend if you are starting with a color or BW image.

If color, make a copy of the original layer on top… desaturate (do not make grayscale) the layer and use the “eraser” to erase the BW where it is you want color. Tedious but easy!

If BW, make a blank layer on top… use “brush” to paint (opaqe) your color on the blank layer over where you want it in the image… then use “multiply” as your blend mode and you will have the color in the BW.

the easiest way is to click on the eraser tool, click on the "erase to history' checkbox at the top of the screen ,select image >adjustments >desaturate. Click on the the eraser tool again , set the opacity and flow (at the top of the screen again) to about 85% and erase the areas you wish to restore the color to.
